Help me tell my left from my right....
« on: February 14, 2010 - 02:26:15 PM »
So I spent a little time today starting to put together some parts on the front end.

Installed the bushing and pivot pin into the driver's LCA...

And installed it along with one of the new torsion bars and CAP Auto strut bars.... :2thumbs:

Next step I guess is the lower ball joint and spindle .....But I cant tell which is the drivers side and which is the right side spindle..... :clueless:

I looked online and found that some folks reverse them for clearance issues...but I should be able to run mine "stock"...installing the 11.75 rotors, but have 15" aftermarket rims....thing is I couldnt find any pics showing left from right.....

Probably a "dumb" newbie question.....but can someone clue me in ?   :1zhelp:

These are 75 Dart spindles.

thanks guys

Thanks! Looked all over these and saw no markings like that..... :dunno:

So the left one in my picture is the passenger side and the right is the driver side..... :2thumbs:

Just to double check, you dont set the final torque to the LCA pin nut until the weight of the car is on the suspension, according to the manual....in fact it says to go only "finger tight"....whats the idea there?

Yup, the lft is the pass side. The disc brake caliper mount will be on the front..  Remember to tighten the nuts not the bolts that hold the spindal to the ball joint. The long bolts should fit snug in the lower ball joint

Good advice, thanks!

Here's another one -- will the bolts that held the lbJ to the drum brake work with this spindle?

The stock location origionally was the front.
But actually you can mount them so the calipers are on the rear if you want. It does not matter.

The calipers will swap from side to side too so your bleed nipple will always be on top.

See that is what was cornfusing me...LOL

I am thinking here......I am converting from drum to disk......the stock location for the hose to connect to the brake line at the frame is to the rear of the car.

Is that the location for it on disk cars?

depending on the calipers & adapters you use they can be front or rear mounted , typical pin type 70 set up is front mount with the hose coming out of the caliper to the rear but the banjo style slidr calipers work better rear mounted

I have the slider type (by "banjo type" you mean the hose connection on the caliper, right ?).....what would I gain by reversing them?

I am going to be running the 11.75" rotors and the calipers/adaptors from a '80 New Yorker.

The manual for my 72 shows two types of calipers....a "fixed", dual piston caliper mounted to the rear and a "floating", pin type caliper mounted to the front.....the pictures there show that the hose screws in straight to the caliper versus banjo style......obviously since I am using 80 NYer calipers that will be different).

Any chance anyone has some pictures of each way (mounted front versus back)?  I am curious on the hose routing.....

rear mount should work best for you , I would test fit everything before deciding which way to mount the spindles but generally the caliper & hose fit better in the rear position with the banjo mount

Well, I assembled the spindle with the caliper on the front....

I think I am OK.

Clearance with the wheel on is OK.......hose seems to reach fine...at full drop the hose touches the very edge of the LCA and one of the adaptor bolts....if the caliper were in the back I think the hose would be too long and have to make some wired kind of curl to work from what I can tell....so am gonna try the front mount for now.

Great thing is -- THE WHEEL FITS AND CLEARANCE IS FINE!!! :woohoo:  I was real nervous about that since they are aftermarket rims.

I fitted mine on the front simply because I was told that was right by someone. But if I had thought about it I would have put them on the rear because it made the stock flexy brake hose very tight on the length at full lock.
But it was a good excuse to get some braided hose made up the correct length. :naughty:

I checked the hose again this morning at full turns and it seems ok.....I "think" I ordered the brake hoses for the 80 NYer (which is what I used for the rotors/calipers)....so maybe mine are just a tad longer? :dunno:

Hey, your paint job there looks good...I was debating whether to paint my rotrs and calipers but it seems like a real PITA to mask everything off that needs to be masked.  Also, does painting the rotor cause it to hold more heat at all ya think?

I like the way mine look now..all shiny and new bare metal....which will be rusty before no time at all I am sure.

Just left over Bill Hirsch Automotive engine paint brushed on. No masking needed.

If you want the heat to radiate away paint them black. Black is far more effective at radiating heat than silver or polished metal which is actually one of the worst finishes for radiating.
