I have an update on the car.  I got it fixed yesterday.

I had water in the gas and a leaking fuel filter.  I checked  my clear filter and noticed  there were bubbles in the gas, and it appeared slimey.   So I pulled the filter off and found the top was only on hand tight, cross threaded and slightly crooked.  I should have checked that when I originally installed it.  There was also some debris in it.

I unhooked the line at the sending unit and blew out the main hard line.  Some dirt came out.   I then hooked my pump to the sending unit and pumped out a glass of gas.  There was 1 inch of water on the bottom and 2 inches of gas!  Also the gas was murky looking.  So I pumped out about 8 gallons of gas until the tank was empty.  The stuff from the top looked pretty clean.

I went down to NAPA and bought a new clear filter, this time I got a 3/8 because the 5/16 had a pretty small inside diameter.  It was the bottle neck of the fuel line.  I stretched the 5/16 hose onto it which worked fine.  I then put in some clean gas and some stp gas treatment to get any remaining moisture out.

The car runs great now.  Better than it eve has since I have had it.  I really feel like the car is finally mechanically sound and ready to drive.

My impression of what was happening is there was water in the carb bowls which was settled there.  When I would go around a corner or up a hill the carb would suck in that water.

So my distributor was shot too, so that needed to be replaced anyway.  The shaft was so sloppy it was eating caps and rotors.

My electrical issues with the ballast resistor and my power to the electric choke, but those will be easy to work out when I clean up and detail the wiring and have no apparent effect on the car.

Thanks to all for the help and advice.  Now all thats left is to drive it!

Yes it was right where we started.  My friend who helped told me the same thing as well and I did not check the gas properly.  However this chain of events led me to do some serious tightening up on other stuff that needed it and I learned a thing or three along the way!

We also modified the gas cap to fit now I need to make a thicker rubber ring so it seals good and fits tight and I am there!

Maybe your 318 was a HIMMEY all this time and you couldn't tell because of the water in the gas......   LOL ! ! !
Enjoy driving that fine ride!

I am guessing some time in it's checkered past it has had some work done south of the border, so I think it may just have a 318 HIMMEY in it.   :cooldancing:

Hey, Ian, does that mean if you and I and Rupak get together again, one of us might actually be driving an E-body?   :roflsmiley:

If Rupaks car runs that may be a possibility.  :eek7:
My car is smoking pretty good and the harmonic balancer issue is not going away.  I may just put a new engine in it.
