727 shifting funny
« on: February 19, 2010 - 11:04:12 AM »
Hey guys im having some probs with my transmission shifting from 2nd to drive. It was professionally rebuilt about 700 miles ago and has a B&M street/strip shift kit in it. 1 to 2 it shifts hard like its supposed too, but then 2nd to drive sometimes it wont shift at all and then sometimes it does shift but it slips pretty bad. if your watching the tach from 2nd to drive the RPM's just fall slowly instead of all at once. Its been doing it for about a day so ive just been keeping it around town, driving slow and i have just been keeping it in 2nd. Its not low on fluid and has never been run low, surely its not going out. The guy that built it has quite the reputation for doing very good work. Could it be in the linkage? I am not having problems with any other gears. If it is going out this will be the 2nd time in 1500 miles that its gone out.

this why I gave up on Auto trannys you ask for what you want pay the bill & get crap , we replaced about 4 trannys in my friends Charger one summer , none worked properly or lasted , the lazy 2-3 shift has always been an issue . The only trans I have ever seen that worked right was in  LIL Red Express , if you held the throttle on the floor the trans would shift at 5500 rpm , if you lifted it would shift early & it would shift hard every time , it took a few trophies at the track as well it was stupidly consistant , just floor it & it would et the same everytime .
I have no clue why it is so hard to build a simple 727 auto & make it work they way you want it to , every other trans is more complicated to build & set up

if you hold it to the floor it shifts at high RPM but you can hear it squealing when it shifts. If you are just putting around town and it does decide to shift it will shift litteraly one second after it shifts into 2nd. Its like it wants to go from 1 to 3 and just skip 2nd. Thats if it does decide to shift. If it is going out im just going to put a 4 speed in it. Ive always wanted one anyways.

Could be a sticky shift valve in the valve body. It's not a big deal to drop the vbody, take it apart and clean it.

I'd wait to tear in to it until Terry (tactransman) chimes in. He knows a heck of a lot more about these trannys than I do, and he might have a better idea of what's causing your issues.

It doesn't take much at all to cause a shift valve to stick. Brake cleaner works well for cleaning valve bodies. Just make dang sure to lay the valves out in order so you get them back in the right place. Make sure they slide freely in their bores after you put it back together. And pay attention to where the check balls go. 727 valve bodies are pretty simple so as long as you're careful, you'll be ok.

It sounds like it has a major problem and needs to come back out! I would have the pan dropped and see if it has any "soot" in the bottom and see if the fluid has ANY funny smell to it.

LOL  Been there done that.

I cant help with the tranny issue...Tactransman is the expert on that stuff.   :2thumbs:

But...

You can wash a keyboard in warm water and mild soap. Dont submerge it, just let the water run over the keyboard as you hold it at an angle.

Then blow it out with air or let drip dry for a while.  I also grab it at one end and swing it hard so the water comes out faster.

Done this many times.

(This is assuming your keyboard is relatively modern).

If it still works funky when you try it again it either needs washed better or just junk it as cheap as they are.

Well i adjusted the linkage today and that didnt help anything at all. I guess ill drop the pan this weekend and take the valve body out of it. Is there a different valve for each gear? And that would be the reason why it shifts into 2nd and not 3rd?

A stuck valve in the VB will keep it from shifting into a gear. But it will not go to a "neutral" when it is time to shift. for example,it will feel like you have the shifter in 2nd still. Is that how it acts?

yes...you shift it into drive and nothing happens at all.
