Rebuilding a 727 possible in the garage?
« on: February 19, 2010 - 10:33:41 PM »
I just got a 727 transmission on craigslist for my car.  I am going to try to rebuild it.  Am I crazy or is this something I can do? I am a pretty mechanically inclined person. I've rebuilt engines, suspensions, and carbs.  Is there a book that would walk me through it?  I am a little intimidated by all of the parts that are in there.
I have no idea what most of them do.   :feedback:

Their are many books on the subject and even a walk-through on the Mopar Muscle mag site. IMO it's much easier to do a 727-904 tranny than to rebuild a motor. And most of the parts the tranny Ads on TV talk about to discourage anyone from working on theirs are in the valve body.

I re built a 727 once. Not to hard really.

I would look into putting in a 4 gear planetary and a 5 disc clutch set up back in it. Also an opportune time to consider a stall converter upgrade.

You have TV ads about transmission building !?!

99.9% of the "great British public" wouldn't recognise a transmission if they fell over one in the street.

You can absolutely do it. They're not that bad at all. Get this book http://www.amazon.com/Torqueflite-727-Transmission-Handbook-HP1399/dp/1557883998/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266668564&sr=8-1
It leads you through it step by step and really makes it easy. Also, there are very helpful members here who can help you through any problems you may encounter.

Don't forget to soak all the new clutchs/bands in tranny fluid for a few days before installing them.  :2thumbs:

The tranny I bought is from a Dart with a 318.  From what I have read the bellhousing is correct, but I am wondering if the nose is correct.  It is going in a 70 Challenger.

And thanks for the feedback.  It's always good to bounce ideas off people.

are you putting the trans behind a small block  a eng or b/rb .
a A ENG TRANS WONT FIT A B/RB ENG .  as long as you have a trans that came put of a car you are ok.  are you sure its a 727 ?

I don't have the tranny or engine from my car to compare to.  I'm putting it behind a 340 though.

the biggest issue is loading the drums , you need a 3 legged press to release & install the spring

On the passenger side of the bellhousing is: 5R114337
Does that make since?

CP - is that 3 legged press an expensive tool?

A couple of C-clamps will also work if you don't want to spend the money on a press. It's not as convenient, but can certainly be done.
