Pilot bushing material
« on: February 20, 2010 - 07:02:40 PM »
Anyone have any input on pilot bushings? my transmission guy tells me to make sure a magnet will hardly stick to a pilot bushing of toss it. I've tried 2 different bushings and they're hard as tool steel and I have to pry them off a magnet.

Where can you get a bushing with a lower steel content ?

I got a few bronze or brass? types like the originals. I will try to stick a mag to one tomorrow for you. I've installed 3 of them in friends and customers cars and even mine with no issues

The original bushings were 'oilite' bronze with oil impregnated in them.  As they heat up the oil comes out.  The only bearing I use now though is the one that vinb shows a picture of (the '90's up truck bearing).

Quick note:
That bearing is made by National / BCA. That is there part number on the bearing if I remember right. You can get that at your local jobber too..

Wouldn't you have to modify the input to use the bearing? seems like the splines would hit it.

Take note of the beveld edge facing out. It acts like a guide like on the bronze sleeve bushing

Not a problem, done it many times, no mod needed.  The bronze bushing uses the front half of the input shaft surface, while the needle bearing uses the rear half.

You do need to remove the old bronze one though, can't run both.

I'll have my parts store try that number, looks like a thin bearing so if it's seated all the way in I see what you're saying.
