Manual Tranny for Hemi
« on: February 22, 2010 - 01:19:25 PM »
Trying to decide on the best route to go for a manual tranny in a 71 Hemi Cuda. Don't need the tranny right now but I have to decide to figure on the gear ratio so I can get the rear end done.

It would be nice to go with an overdrive but does it get really expensive trying to put something like a T56 in?

Looked at the Passon A833 overdrive but I don't really like the idea of a 3spd with overdrive, just seams like a step backwards to me.

So is it just best to stick with a stock A833, which I would have to find.......

well you have 3 options , the Tremec 5 spd od , the Keisler 18 spline hemi OD or the factory 833 OD , the keisler & the factory are basically a bolt in deal , the tremec is a bunch of modifing & it is really no where near as strong as the 833 version .the other consideation is the gearvendor that bolts onto the rear of the 833 4 spd , it is probably the strongest way to go & will give you 5 speeds

Seeing as I don't want a 3spd with OD and I think that the cost of getting a Tremec to fit really isn't worth the benifit, I think I will just stick with a stock 4spd.

MM- there was a standard 4 speed made way back that had the 3:09 first gear with 1:1 4th. But I don't think it was a hemi spline - I believe it was 23 spline only. That would give you the option to run a slightly taller rear without sacrificing takeoff.

all 833 trans have a 1 to 1 fourth gear, unless you get an overdrive with the 309 first

I was refering to the Passon kit that converts you 4 speed 833 to a 3 speed with over drive. Standard 4 speed with a 1:1 4th is the best option. Only way I will do overdrive is a 5 or 6 speed but that sounds costly.

To obtain the 5 or 6 speed you have these options.

The Tremec TKO's are a very stout piece that, as mentioned above, is modified to fit in the chassis.  The T56 is a whole new bag of worms.  The T56 Magnum is a large and long transmission.  The cost for the extra gear is $600.00 over the price of TKO 5 Speed.  The modifications to make a six-speed fix into the E-Body platform include cutting / removal of the existing tunnel, cutting / removal / rebuilding of the torsion bar cross member - that's all.  I have a cross member for the T56 Magnums for the E-Bodies that is one items that would not have to be created.  If your interested in the T-56 Magnum swap - I'll post what it takes in terms of parts and hardware when I get to my home computer.

I think that would be great information to be shared. There has been a lot of debate on the T56 install on these cars.

The standard A833 I was referring to was the A body unit and it does have a 3.09 first gear and 1:1 4th. No good for E body though unless you do some big changes. Also 23 spline only. Check out the History section from Brewers.

How much HP/Torque are you planning on? A 23 spline can take alot. If you ever plan on slicks, I can see the necessity for a 18 spline even more then.
