my 727 is playing games with my head..
« on: February 24, 2010 - 06:12:41 PM »
In the summer it started slipping, I checked the fluid to make sure it wasnt low...it was not low, but rather overfilled(from prior owner)...and the fluid was clean, not burnt.  Now I got a day without snow covered roads and was driving to drop it off and my mechanics shop, and it stopped moving on the way.  Checked the fluid, and it was bone dry..filled it up to limp it to the shop, and I couldnt get that tranny to slip to save my life...sooo, is it shot or not?  did it run ok because it is so cold out?  Will my mechanic be able to get a fair idea if its toast by dropping the pan?  any thoughts are helpful, thanks.

If you are not checking the level in the N- neutral position after warming up you will get a much fuller reading than actual... Any known leaks?

yeah, there was a leak, hard to pinpoint though.  if its shot there should be a metallic look to the fluid right?  like shavings in it, at least one indication right?

You will not see it without dripping the pan... Some metal flakes are normal so don't panic, this is just the wear of the clutches.    I'm Sure we will hear from tactransman soon.
Running a little low does not necessarily  kill one... I have a 98 Dakota that was low every time I checked it from 130K- 197K... Finally had it rebuilt to get rid of the leak which had gotten bad by then.

I just dont get why it was slipping this summer when it was full, then ran like a champ today.  and i should clarify that it was going to the shop to have the tranny rebuilt as it was slipping going into 3rd over the summer...just confusing and nerve racking when it worked flawlessly today after refilling it.  I mean i beat the crap out of it on the way...

I think when your mechanic drops the pan ,the answers will be clear.
