727 - Are they all the same?
« on: February 26, 2010 - 09:29:33 PM »
I am thinking of switching out my lock up 727 trans in my Cuda (more TQ converter choices).

I am thinking of picking up one from a junkyard, likely out of a truck or van (that is all there really is around here) and rebuild it.  Is there any thing that I need to watchout for, different, bad gear sets etc.

Thanks,

Jason

the trucks and vans will have a different tailshaft. I bought one out of a motor home and the case was different, then i had a guy put the internals out of the motor home in a car housing, the motorhome trannys had extra clutches and bands or something like that and i believe some of the heavy duty truck trannys did too, supposed to be much stronger.

there were constant changes , part throttle kickdown was added as well as different valve bodys & NSS switches , as well as different amounts of clutches in the clutch packs for HD applications

A 2WD truck or van one will be fine as long as it looks like the regular version and does not have the short shaft/bolt on yoke style. The two "tab" hole bosses on the bottom of the extension housing are necessary for the "slap stick" console. Stay '68 and newer also.

WRONG ^^^ above. the Truck Transmission 2wd or even a 4x4 will not work. I have made this mistake before. The mounting tabs are not there for your car. The internals are the same.  THAT'S it.

I believe you are right. You sell these for a living.  I appologize, for I have not seen them all.  You sound like you know your stuff.
It's just that in my limited past experiece it's not just the mounting that won't work, it's the shorter tail issue. Every truck transmission I have played with did not have a slip in drive shaft, They had a yoke similiar to a rear end of a rear axle.

I can tell you that when it comes to 2WD 727 truck transmissions,it is HARDER to find a bolt on yoke style than a slip in style. The bolt on yoke style is usually in a 4X4 with a divorced transfer case or a club cab long bed.

Thanks guys...now I know what to look for.

If I can not find the right one, can I mix and match parts from the two...like if the tail shaft is wrong, can I use the tail shaft from the lock up on the non lock up???
