Starter Suggestions for my 440-6pack Cuda w/ Headers
« on: February 28, 2010 - 09:15:00 PM »
My factory starter has bit the dust and since it is a royal pain to swap the starter on it with headers installed, I thought I would ask here about the best starter to put on it.  I think I want to put something smaller and better than a factory one back on it.  Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Blueglow

Mini starter.  I usually pick one up for a 1994 dodge truck application.  Those little starters are great!

Ebay has some really good deals on these, just search on 'Mopar starter'.  I've seen several rebuilt Denso mini starters going for around $50 plus shipping.  A word of warning, I actually had an issue with a mini starter fitting several years back with a cheap set of headers, sorry don't remember the brand (Headman maybe?).  I ordered a set of Hooker Comps and the starter cleared the tubes, but I'm not sure I could take it out without at least loosening the headers though.

I remember talking to some of the support reps at the factory about this and at the time they weren't aware of the problem.  They had me mark the area of contact before returning the headers.  I did, but I also told them its easy to spot all the rub marks on the inside of the one tube!  This was probably around 15 years ago or so.  Not sure if that's when Mopar came out with the smaller starter or not.

The Hedmans do not allow a mini starter. In fact, for my son's 440 charger, we were forced to use the little short slant 6 starter. Could not even use the stck starter. Hedman people would not believe it when we phoned them - we hung up on them. Buy TTI and your problems go away.

I was able to use a Summit mini with Hedmans, but it touches the nose of the starter on one of the tubes. This is on a 383. Isn't a 440 wider?

I have a mini starter with my Hedmans and a 440. It did take making a dent in one of the tubes, but it fit fine. I just couldn't cough up 3 times the cost of Hedmans to buy TTI's.    :grinno:

At this point I'm thinking they're faking ignorance, same story I got many years ago.  I'm thinking this shouldn't be news to them any longer.....

That's exactly what I wasn't willing to put up with.  Imagine all the heat you're transferring directly to the starter with them touching like that.  It's bad enough that headers wrap around the starters as much as they do even without touching.
