Fuel Vapor Canister
« on: March 01, 2010 - 08:11:08 PM »
Hello,

My 1972 Challenger manual talks about a fuel vapor canister and mentions that the charcol filter should be replaced every so often.  Unfortunately, there is no picture of it nor is there a description of it.

Where could it be hiding?

On my 73 it was on the rad support on the passenger side.
Bad picture but you can see the fittings just over the support.
Usually they have been removed .

Thanks Farmboy70 for the response and photos!  I suspected it might be in rear by the gas tank, so thanks for setting me straight.

The charcole canister can be seen in the above pics.  It is right in the front passengers corner where the radiator support and the inner fender meet.

The fuel vapor separator is located back by the gas tank.  It mounts to the shock X-member.  Here is a pic...

Thanks burdar.  I know for a fact that I don't have the charcoal canister in the engine bay, but I'll need to check for the vapor separator.  I don't recall seeing it, but then again, I've not taken a hard look at the underneath.

Me?  It's my origonal one.  I soaked it in EvapoRust and then had my father-in-law braze up a couple pinholes.  I then filled in most of the pits and painted it with Eastwoods "Tank Tone" paint...finally a coat of matte clear.

Here's what I started with...

A lot of people remove the charcole canister in the engine compartment but you still need to retain the separator.  It lets air into the tank as the gas is used up.

I guess you could drill a vent hole into the fill pipe somewhere that would vent the tank.  There is no reason to remove the separator...it weighes vertually nothing.  Just remove the canister in the engine comp if you want to but keep the vent line.

Mine was toast. Couldn't find a new one. It kept leaking if I just plugged the holes. Had to drill a small hole in the cap to breathe. Even with the breather. That looks great!

The filter that the FSM referred to, is a fiber or foam pad that is in the bottom of the canister, and the bottom is supposed to twist off so it can be changed. The canister is a win-win situation, as it traps evaporated fuel for you to use on your next startup, and doesn't steal any horsepower. Also, as mentioned, it weighs very little.
