A shocking failure.
« on: March 04, 2010 - 05:23:31 PM »
I have 4 new KYB shocks I want to try out on my car, but I have gotten hung up on what I think should be the simplest step. Removing the nuts from the top of the front shocks. They loosen up fine, but won't go past the last two threads, even if I am pulling up on the nuts while using pliers. I thought that first one was a fluke, but since both sides do the same thing...Is there a trick I don't know about? I would hate to try and cut them out of there, but I really don't see a solution. Thanks for any advice.

Mike, if you are trashing the old ones, maybe you can grab the threaded studs with channel locks and crank on 'em. . .  :clueless:

If you are junking the old ones, just put a deepwell socket on the nut, connect a long extension, and bend the bayonette back and forth a few times.  It will snap it off just below the nut. :2thumbs:

I guess I should have mentioned I was going to trash the old ones. Heck, who knows how old they are. So tomorrow I head back to it in my seek and destroy mode.   :scared:

By the way BIGS, I am no longer leaking tranny fluid.    :jumping:

My shocks have a small hex head to hold the shaft while the nut is being turned

Wade,

They do have a funny head on them(maybe hex...I didn't pay attention), but why should you have to hold the shaft while you are turning the nut? It seems kinda crazy, but up until now, I have only changed out rear shocks.

break it ,cut it or grab the shaft with vice grips , thereis usually an oval or hex at the top as well , I even own the special sockets to hold the top of the shaft

Always have a look at the top of the shocker before undoing the nut, sometimes there is a burr or thread damaged, a file can correct this problem if you are reusing. Of course when not reusing and the thread is damaged just cut off above the nut and then unwind the nut.   :2thumbs:

Hey Mike, where was the tranny leaking from?

I have a leak too.

I originally thought it was leaking from the o-ring in the speedo gear housing. When I took the bracket off of the tranny to get to the speedo gear housing, I found that it was leaking from where the speedo cable connects to the housing. It turns out my speedo cable was very loose. I tightened it up, and all is well.
