Low oil pressure??????
« on: March 07, 2010 - 06:59:59 PM »
My oil pressure was real high (340, stroked to 416), 70 at idle and 100 when I stood on it. I changed from the stock oil filter adapter plate to a 90* adapter and went to a K&N oil filter with 10w30 oil.
My oil pressure at 1,000 rpm idle is about 10 psi...............WHAT could cause this????
THANKS!!!

Sounds like a sticking releif valve in the oil pump (stuck closed with 70 at idle, stuck open with 10 at idle).

What grade of oil did you use before, the 70 psi at idle is too high, 10w 30 seems a bit light, is this a new motor?

Yes, it's a new motor....
I'll remove the 90* adapter I just put on and see if some of the Permatex Ultra Black could have broken free and clogged something. At 10 PSI, how fast would I hurt the motor? What would get hurt first?

On a fresh motor any bearing surface, big ends are probably under the most stress.

If the engine was only idling during most of this, then I doubt any damage was done as long as the oil that was circulating followed the normal path.  If you drove the car, or revved the engine  a bunch, that would not do things any good.

There is very little load on the rotating assembling at idle.

You shouldn't need any sealant for the adapter.

How many holes were in the original plate? What oil was used previously? What does the oil pressure go up to at 3K rpm?

4 holes in the original plate.
10w30 was used.
The oil pressure at idle was 56-60 when I first drove the car with the new 90* adapter. As I drove it and it got hot the oil pressure at idle kept getting lower. As the RPM's went up, the oil pressure would go up. At 3,000 RPM's it would get to 40-50 psi.
I never lost all oil pressure, it would always go up as the RPM's went up. Water temperature never got above 195. I drained the oil, it looks dark and ugly. That oil only has around 50 miles on it.
I only drove the car 15 miles with the 90* adapter, the oil pressure was low for about 5 of those miles.........

There is some metallic color in the oil, I wonder how bad I may have hurt it......
What the heck do I do now?  I'm not sure what I've done wrong, but plenty unhappy. This hurts!
First, I'll pull the oil filter and the adapter to see what's going on there.

I cut the filter apart, there are no chunks of silicone or metal pieces.
I removed the 90* adapter, everything looks good, no obstructions. The more I think about this, the more I think it's a oil pump problem, what else could it be?

I've had the sticking releif valve in the oil pump problem on 3 different motors.

Was a new oil pump installed, who rebuilt the motor, I would be concerned too if the oil came out black with so few miles on it, who knows what might have been left in the motor if it wasn't cleaned properly.   :scared:

My oil was black and ugly to when I did my first oil change.Even still dark after the 2nd oil change when I had to replace the pan gaskets. Both done within 200 miles on the motor.I think it is the assembly lube being mixed with the oil.I just did a 3rd oil change and it was much cleaner.
