Ground On Ring Gear?
« on: March 08, 2010 - 01:21:46 AM »
I found a like new original 3.55 ring and pinion for sale,  like new except some idiot ground two of the tops of teeth on the ring gear down about 1/8" towards the inside. it isn't close to the wear pattern area and they're super cheap because of it. I normally wouldn't give them a thought but they are original and otherwise in great shape, since it's not in the contact area I can't see why it would matter , am I right?

I have no idea why anyone would do that.

They are used, he said they worked fine but he went to 391.1 gears so they're now on his bench.  it isn't the cost of the gear set I'm worried about it's the work of getting them installed if it turns out I'm wrong that concerns me.

sould be fine , as long as the ground area is smooth there will not be a stress riser & being away from the contact area I cannot see it having a problem , if the price is good you could always repalce the gear set for $250 or so

Do you know how many miles are on them?  Once a set is used, they will develop a wear pattern, and when removed and reinstalled, the alignment will be different.  If they have a pretty good wear pattern on them, then they might make a lot of noise when you install them.  For the relative price difference ($100?), I would buy a new set so there are no concerns.
