there`s no way to know there is a hernia unless you had an MRI scan.  :nono:
Not true.  The cough test is the number 1 test to check.  If it is suspected, then they can order more tests, but it will definitely give an indication if one is present.

TC - I wish you all the best.  Hopefully it is a minor one that will go away.  Would surgery be an option?

I can't schedule surgery till I hear what HR in MN. wants to tell me what their decision is. I just spoke with my VA Nurse Practitioner. She couldn't tell me what the recovery time is after surgury. Only the surgeon can. That is what I really need to know to tell HR. So they can re evaluate what to do with me on start date, training, etc. Once I know what they say, I can schedule surgery. Certainly it isn't not painful or life threatening to me right now.

God I hate going under the knife. Especially there.  :22yikes:

well... I`ve been running around with a hernia in my neck for a few years now...  every once in a while I can`t move... and it hurts,  but no way I`ll have surgery when it stays like this.
In my country the neurologist is the only one who will do research and tell you ( after mri ) if you have a hernia, and tell you if, and how it should be treated.  If you check 10 people , at least half of them will test positive, and maybe one will need surgery to keep going.  I would never go through surgery if I were in your position Mike... you always have the risk of getting worse, and what`s to gain when you don`t have any problems with the hernia being there...

Dave,

Yes I will be at the Wasaba location during daytime.
386 Wabasha St N
St Paul, MN 55102

This will be for my training. I am tentatively scheduled to be there for a week. I would be arriving on Sunday April 18th. Arrival ime is still unknown. I don't know what hotel I will be staying at either.

I just got off the phone with my field office near me. They haven't heard back from HR at MN. what their determination is regading my hernia. Sounds like I won't get the final verdict on the situation till Thursday.  It would be great to get together with you Dave.   :2thumbs:

I've got to get this job even if it means they tell me I must get surgery. I can get it done ASAP at the VA once they say I'm on board with the company. I bet I've had this hernia over 2 years now.

Hi TC-
Sorry to hear about the hernia.  Hopefully it won't affect the jo; they can waiver the condition or hold it for you untill after surgery/heal time.

You mention going to the VA.  My neighbor, Viet Nam vet, goes to the VA for his knees.  He's been going for years w/o any complaints.  Other than long wait time in the lobby.

Are you retired military? And, do you have the option to use Tri-Care?  We've been using Tri-Care for the past few years for my wife.  No complaints - they're paying all the bills.  Just curiouse.

Take care,
Ron

I did my 4 years in the Army and got out in 83', 63W10 Diesel Mechanic. Every year they do a means analysis...how much I make and what I can pay based on employment income. Since I haven't officially started working yet, I should be able to get this done for nothing or very little out of pocket.

The VA Palo Alto hospital is very good. So far I would say better than Blue Cross or Kaiser which I've had both in the past.

Thanks for the info.

Good luck with the procedure.
During healing time you won't be able to work on the Cuda.
But, you'll have plenty of time on CC.com, or researching on the internet.

Keep us posted.
That being said, I'm willing to bet that afterwards no one will post: This Post is Worthless w/o Pictures   :roflsmiley:

I'm not sure how much your surgeon has told you but this is what I know from my experience.

I recently went through a groinal hernia as well.  I had an inguenal hernia which means the abdominal wall where the testicles drop through during fetal development were either too big around or too thin thus allowing my intestines to bulge out.  Fortunately for me my insides never became incarcerated meaning got stuck in the abdominal wall.  My recovery time was only 4 weeks, being active duty in the military in a law enforcement field I took two extra weeks to make sure I was good to go.  The first two weeks I was heavily medicated on vicodin and the third and fourth week I was only moderately medicated.  The 5th and 6th week I was only on ibuprofen, about 800mg every 4-6 hours.  Now, this repair was an incisional repair, you can ask for a lapriscopic repair, though it will depend on the hernia you have.  If you get the lapriscopy you'll only be out for a few days.  With the lapriscopy they basically take a laser and put it in you to do the repairs.  I was told by my surgeon that lapriscopy repair times are 6-8 days, they have a significantly lower risk of infection but have a "slightly" higher risk of reherniation.  The benefits to the open surgery is the repair is more stable but the recovery time is much longer.  With the open surgery they take a synthetic mesh plate and put it around the cord that connects your testicle to your body where it passes through the abdominal wall, then they sew it directly to the wall.  I believe I was not a candidate for the lapriscopy because of the size of the hole.  So ask your surgeon.  If you qualify for the lapriscopy and it fits you well to do it then go with that, tell your new employer that you will only be down for a few days and should be back on your feet within a week or two of surgery and they hopefully will be "OK" with that.  If you have any questions about what to expect or anything and you don't want to hear it from a doctor, send me a message, I'd be more than willing to tell you more about the worst parts!

Torque is how far you can push that wall after you hit it.

Thank you so much GV for this info. I found out that mine is a inguenal hernia as well. After I talk to the Dr., I may very well be wanting to talk with you more on this.  :2thumbs:

Thanks again.

:eek2: Sounds severe Mike, at least you will be laying around with a big buzz dude. And what geminiviper described almost sounded like some of these pharmacuitical adds you see on TV today. I have a rather high tollerance for pain, but that is one I'd do without, that would have to be one hell of a job to go through that brother. :roflsmiley:

Still no decision from HR yet and here it is Friday. My flight is supposed to be on Sunday. Everytime I hear my cell phone ring, I get all worked up that this is the call I've been waiting for.

A Coca Cola recruiter called me up yesterday showing interest in me. i told her I would get back w/her on Friday.

Well it looks like you might have a second option if this other one falls through, more reason to keep positive.   :2thumbs:   :bananasmi
