Hey Bart, you will finally have to visit me to have a look at the dash-pad!!
I'm not sure about thickness, let's guess a good .7 millimetre. Not sure. But it is strong enough.
It's very whibly-whobbly.
My upholstry shop had a very hard time putting leather on it. They had to sow a lot, and fill up the blank between steel frame of the dash-pad and the overlay. But they did a great job, not cheap though. I could get some pictures of it tomorrow! Will post them over here.
Bart, if you want to have your dash pad covered, plaese do not remove anything of your old one. It is easy to fill the cracks, and than cover the pad. But it's very hard to get a clean frame filled the right way. Reconsider covering with leather for putting an overlay on it. This last option is something you can do yourself.
