Matt,

Could you tell me which Eastwood products you believe are desirable to prep a new gas tank before install?  Sealers, etchs, paints?  Thanks for your help.......

I just installed a new tank. I used eastwoods paint prep and wiped it down real good, then used their tank color paint on it which gives it a flat gray look.
Still looks good after a few weeks but scratches easily. Hey, touch ups are easy too.
But, I wonder if I should have just left it the original shiny galvanized color.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering, although I suspect the flat black looks a lot better.  Did you use any internal sealer?

Hey sorry for the delay guys, in the process of moving and my net is down at home (place with a bigger garage and driveway of course  :P ).

Anyways, we have our gas tank sealer kit, in which you can recoat and reseal the inside of your tank. Then we recommend our "tank tone" kit if you have visual rust on the outside of the tank, this will convert the surface to a paintable finish and you can spray the supplied tank paint right over top.

Just take your time with recoating the inside and that tank should be good to go for the rest of your cars life!

Matt,

Would you use the sealer on a brand new tank?  It seems scary to coat a new tank with anything inside?

A new tank you shouldn't really need to coat.. That is generally something you do when restoring a old tank to fill any pinholes and seal any rust/corrosion on the inside.. so if you are going with a new tank you shouldn't have those issues.. unless you are trying to be wayyyy overally cautious. But for my own vehicle with a new tank, I'd just drop the new tank in :)

Matt,

OK cool.  Then all I need to do is paint, and the surface should be new and without rust.  Does your Tank Tone come without the rust remvoal spray product?  Maybe another primer?  Or maybe is this job now so simple that I should just go to the hardware store and grab any metal primer and flat Bback paint?

Tank Tone available alone. : http://www.eastwood.com/ew-tank-tone-metallic-coating-aerosol-13-oz.html?srccode=cuda

I'd prep by spraying with our "PRE" to clean off any grease, oil, etc that would hurt paint adhesion.

Those are the 2 products I used last month on my tank. Rubbing the new galvanized tank with the pre stuff...lots of grey dirt and grease kept coming off. Get it clean.

Any pics of your tank you painted?

It is amazing what the PRE pulls off of parts! Often times poor paint adhesion or paint flaking is due to inproper prep. PRE makes it very easy for a final step before painting. Also a tip is to make sure you are wearing rubber gloves when prepping a part. The oils/grease on your hands transfers onto the part and can be counter-productive!
