Battery Tray..
« on: March 15, 2010 - 12:32:33 PM »
Pulled out my battery tray and bracket yesterday in preperation for my steering gear. Afteronly a year it looks like CRAP. I scuffed /primed /painted it last spring. The tray is alreay looing paint to battery acid altho the battery is kept clean. Used NAPA underhood black on it. And not to my surpise the bracket was only painted from the top but not the underside so thats rusty. I have no "green" paint for this. Is there a "rattle can" solution or should I por-15 these pieces??
Thanks

Go to your auto body paint store and ask if they'll mix up a pint of your color matched. Then spray the parts using a detail gun if you have one. If you don't, use a Preval sprayer available at most ACE hardware stores.

I powder coated my battery tray.
I don't know if it'll last longer or not but it should be a little more durable.

Mike, tell me , whats a preval sprayer?? Admittedly... I'm no body man, got away from it a zillion years ago cause the dust was killin' me.  :eek4: What type of primer would be needed? I could go on and on, which is Y I usually have a buddy do my paint work. Hate to bother him for something this small tho... can anyone "coach" me thru this??

Didn't you have the trunk painted last year?  Was there no paint left over?

Since you're just doing a battery tray, you can paint it the Preval method.
http://www.preval.com/

As I mentioned, you can usually find these at ACE hardwares. I tried a few other types but the Preval is the best one I found so far.

You will need these items.
The pint of paint.    Bring in a color chip from your car to the auto paint supplier and have him match it.
A small can of reducer
Hardener for the paint
A can of primer.

I have a place near me that can actually put auto paint into aerosols. This might be the cheapest route. Ask if they do that at your paint distributor. i could get that done for you if you provided me a color chip.

While I was in Denver I had my buddy spray the tray and the bracket. PPG Sublime, looks great, and I figured let someone who "knows" do it. I am addmittedly NO bodyman. BUT a small can $75...  :faint: holy crap. Granted I've got the rest of it for future touch -ups or whatever. but wow  :money:
