roof skin/quarter seam
« on: March 15, 2010 - 06:21:09 PM »
So we used allmetal at the B pillars. Took it down to bare metal. Welded the seam, ground the welds.   Used Evercoat easy sand for the subtle stuff. All was just fine until we pushed her out into the sun. It heats up and shows the seam. Then cools down and  goes away. It's really weird. Anyone have anything like this happen?  It's very subtle but there. I don't know what to do.   :1zhelp:

It's not the whole width of the seam,Just about 1/4-1/2 "  Can't tell if it's the roof or quarter. Never seen anything quite like this before. Never had a problem.  All was going so good.Sprayed the jambs/bay.  I'm bummed. Worked a long time on those seams.  :hyper: :crying:

you have to blast the welded area, even tiger skin will push out.

So where it's deep it's building up heat and pushing out? I did 3 different coats at different times. It's not the filler. It's weird...Like i can see my welds!?   We are figuring on digging it all out. :crying: Blasting that area and re doing it. But what should we use? A new lead type product?   I'm trying for pics. It's very subtle.

could you explain?   What do you mean it's the welds?

its the contaminants in the welds, i.e. gases releasing once they are sealed.

It's all along the seam though. Not just at the welds. Consistent. Like the roof skin is heating up more/less or something.   Ah....   and THANKS for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!

There seems to be three different schools of thoughts on this topic.

First, is to do like the factory did and lead the seams and then do a skim coat of body filler.

Second, is to just fill the seams with bondo.

And third, is to weld in a filler panel and then bondo the seams.

After talking with my painter, who has been painting cars for over thirty years, I went with option III.  So, I welded the seam closed with a small strip of metal and ground down the welds.  I then cleaned the metal with metal prep, http://www.halonmarketing.com/mall/Rust%20Away%20&%20Metal%20Prep.php  (his recommendation)  then I filled the area with metal to metal body filler, http://www.parasolinc.com/Fillers.asp ,again his suggestion, and then skimmed it with skimmed it with Evercoat, liquid gold body filler.  We spray it with a flat black this weekend.  So far everything looks good no shadowing that I can see so far.
