17x9 fitment questions
« on: March 16, 2010 - 10:58:08 AM »
ok, i found some Mach 1 knockoffs on the local craigsist.

17x9 28mm offset.  I have ~30mm offset spacers.  For all intents I have a stock suspension 71 challenger.

It looks like in front I'm fine... but am I cutting it close in the back?

just for reference I used these links:

It will depend on your car. With the 30 mm spacers you'll be at a 5.1" backspace, which should be about perfect for a stock rear set up and a 9 inch rim. But it will come down to assembly line tolerances. I've seen people run a 5.5" backspace and be just fine in the back with stock suspension, but I've also seen cars that couldn't clear a 5" backspace. It will be pretty close, so you may even clear one side and not the other...

The front looks good huh? How does the tie rod clearance look? I want to run 17x9's in the front too, I think mine will be a 5" BS. The only issue is I have dropped spindles, so the tie rod may be close to the lip of the rim again...

With a rim with a lot of backspacing in the front, the tire will rub the frame when making a tight turn, it's not horrible. In the back on mine, I have about 3/4" of spacers.Like 72 said, depends on how your car was assembled. These cars are all over the place on panel fitment and tolerances.
I reposted (yet again) the pictures from the wheel thread sticky. The tires I have on the rear of my car are the widest I can run (as evidenced by the witness marks on the wheel wells) at this tire height. There are more options available if you run the somewhat standard 25.4 - 25.6" tire height that most 17 through 19" combos end up at because the tire isn't up in the wheel well that much.

I have 17 x 9.5 with 5.5" back spacing at rear in Challenger. I also have a dr diff 1" relocation kit, but the wheel would have fitted quite well even without it. Only problem with the current setup is that I'm mayby bit too close the the fender lip.

This is my plan as well, 17x9 with 275/40R17's front and back.  All stock suspension just lowered.  I haven't figured out offsets yet and unless I can find some cheap or used 17's I might wait until I know exactly which wheels I want (might pick up some cheap 15's in the mean time).  I'm not worried about modifying fenders or anything like that to fit them either since my car's body is already so modified.  Good luck!

thanks,
Dave

ok, good news for me... rims are still for sale...  17x9 Mach 1 rims (Magnum 500 look alikes)

as for the mustang register diameter.  The 11.75" rotors from Advance have a smaller diameter except for the last 1/2" or so.  My Konigs with a mustang register fit fine over them I was surprised to find out.

finally some rims for my victoracers! (race dot slicks)

:iagree:  I was thinking of the Mach 1 rims as well and was eying a set on craigslist but I have the stock front suspension/brake set up and thought I better not as there is a hub issue from what I understand with the stock set up.  Can't wait to see your rims on!   :grinyes:

ok, so I'm still futzing with the tire calc....

for a brief instant (1 day) I had 16x8 -11 offset rims on the back of my challenger with 245/50 tires.  One side rubbed ever so slightly on bumps.

so I'm realizing, going to the 9" wide rim I might need to either (a) run a thinner spacer or (b) trim my wheel lips.

well, good news the price was definitely right.

The bad news... well, only 2 were 17x9, the other two were 17x10.5!  I could probably fit them if I did the Dr. Diff relocation kit, but that's not happening...

looks cool, but bringing it back... *sigh*

oh well, I did manage to get my 17x8s mounted... plenty of room all around...

sucks on the 10.5s. My rears are 18x9 and have stock spring location. I have about 7/16"-1/2" worth of play on either the spring or 1/4 panel side. 'perfect fit'.

I know you only got two, but did you try the 17x9's on all four corners and check for fitment?  If so, were there any issues?

thanks,
Dave

I didn't bring the 17x9s home with me.  The guy let me test fit the 17x10.5 only.

as far as fitment of the 9s: 0 offset (5" backspace) is tight on my car.  The fenderlip has a couple un-even edges that may rub, so I'd have to trim it back to where the wheelwell trim is.  I could go probably go max 5.5" backspace, but close to the spring there.  5.75" would be ideal on my car but that's not a very common backspace (6mm offset).  That's in the rear.  I haven't had a chance to do a lock-to-lock test in the front.

If I decide to develop the car more later on, I will probably go with the Dr. Diff spring relocation and fit an 11" wide rim in the back.

I'm guessing you meant a 5.25" backspacing would be perfect.  If a 5.5" was tight against the leaf spring a 5.75" would be worse, right?  Bummer he didn't let you try the 17x9's.
