Barrett Jackson FLA. 2010
« on: March 19, 2010 - 07:45:44 AM »
What do you think of this Challenger? I am not sure of what it is. It says it is not a clone, but it says it is a partial rebody using the VIN and body stampings. Isn't this illegal? Why would BJ allow this kind of car to be sold?

Depends what they mean by "partial".Any car that has had panels replaced is partially rebodied.

by the sounds of it...

"This car was partially re-bodied to some degree using the original VIN tag with the correct "R1B" VIN Code, as well as a Matching VIN stamped on the cowl and radiator core support."

...they cut these parts off, rolled away the rust underneath, and then rolled something rust-free (or at least less rust) back in underneath, and welded it all back together.  then again, there seem to be enough resto sheet metal out there, that that is the "rebody" disclosure.

hopefully they have pics of the restoration process!  :working:

I looked at the car.  I went to take pics and my camera would not work.  It has been giving me trouble.  I think it died.  The batterys are new in it (before someone askes. LOL).  Here is what I saw.  The core support is bent in two places on the bottom on the drivers side.  The passenger side cowl has three creases in it.  Maybe the car was hit on the drivers side front at one time.  The core support numbers have been ground through with something like a cutting wheel.  The numbers I could see did not match the cowl.  The cowl numbers were stamped in a different font than I have seen from the factory. In my opinion it is a car built from a vin tag. It has the fender tags.  They could have been reproduced.  I wish I had pics so others could see what I did and come up with their own conclusions.

I just watched it go for 87 k . The announcer either didn't know or wasn't saying what rebodied  meant . He said the tags , motor and drive line were all correct but wasn't sure about the rest . The car came with a photo book of the restoration .

I saw the book, but couldn't touch it since I didn't pay to bid.  I'm sure the book shows a full restoration.  It just doesn't show which VIN is being restored. The car had a lot of little things incorrect on it.  I wanted to look under it and see if the motor was a re stamp. I hope it was not bought by one of our members. It is a nice looking car.  I would worry about the re body issues. I noticed the announcers there were being very vague about issues.  They were there to sell cars.  They revealed as little as they had to. I don't go to watch the auction.  I go to look at the cars.  It is a great car show.

I watched it go through. These guys are always good about saying the original engine was destroyed and a date code replacement is in it's place. Something Funky about this car. Hey is it just me or is BJ becoming all about FORDS?

So who knows the full story, or are we just throwing out opinions and "feelings"?  Before we start talking felonies, the full story should at least be posted.  Until someone has hard evidence, opinions should be kept in check.

As far as I know...

I have not seen the car.

I do not know the car.

That said;

Moving VIN numbers from one car to another is a felony.

That is a law, not an opinion.

Bank robbing is a felony.

Unless you have proof that the car is a full rebody or someone robbed a bank what is the piont of stating the law here?

Because moving them and keeping a car until death is one thing, but when you are "grey" in this area when selling a car for this much is most certainly bad.
