Noise from slider calipers
« on: March 20, 2010 - 09:45:28 PM »
I found that the slider calipers on the fish are making lots of noise when I hit bumps.

The calipers are actually loose enough on the mounts to move a bit when the brake is not depressed and the resulting noise is LOUD!

Step on the brakes a little and the noise disappears.

I am starting to wonder if the little black rubber bands that came in the hardware kit and didnt use are what would prevent this?

My setup is a set of calipers/rotors from a 80 NYer and the "large" caliper mounting brackets from ??? .

Any thoughts on this?

Do you have any pictures of how they are setup? I have yet to use the rubber bands in any slider setup I've messed with. My 'Cuda has 11 3/4" Cordoba sliders with no issue. Thinking something is loose, wrong part/pad? Had my front wheels off today, snug as a bug.

There is a picture that someone posted in another thread that I went off of....I have the metal plate installed per that picture and the little tab under the bolt.

UPDATE:
they are installed like this:

I guess I can rebend the metal plate some, but they seemed tight when I first installed....    :clueless:

And I am STILL looking to find out how the rubber bands/rings are used....as shown here:

I am thinking they might help quiet this sort of thing.....but cant figure out for the life of me how they install....the picture shows them just "there"....  :1zhelp:

I've never used the rubber bands either, no problem,

Which way are they loose?  Are the plates not holding them down or are the caliper adapters too wide?

The issue sees mto be that the plates arent holding them down.  It also seems like the issue got progressively worse over 100 miles....the plates seemed to be holding the calipers fine when I installed. Now I can grab the caliper and wiggle it.

   Maybe  “Knock-back”

(3) “Knock-back” of the linings can be caused by the normal deflection of front suspension components during a hard turn. In effect, the disc is tilted and knocks the linings and pistons back. Excessive running clearance results and the driver will notice increased pedal travel on the next brake application. Loose or worn suspension parts, especially from wheel bearings, can increase the problem and cause the driver to pump the pedal several times to get braking action. Check and adjust or replace loose, worn or broken parts.

HEy there.

I dont think it is that.   I dont have to pump my brakes at all and the noise is happening in a straight.

Seems that it NEVER happens if my brakes are slightly depressed...release them and the noise reappears.

I re-bent the plates and took it out for a ride....seemed ok at first and as I drove it got worse. Same symptoms.

When I was beninding the plates it seemed like they bent REALLY easy....I cant see how those plates can hold positive pressure like that....plus, as the brakes heat up, so will those plates and then they are even softer....

Pulled the front wheel when I got home and the claiper is again slightly loose if I grab it and try to "rotate" it....i.e. twist front to back.

Wonder if I got a bad set of brake hardware?

Is it both calipers?

maybe try wrapping the rubber band around the lower slide , the pressure is taken by the upper slide when you are on the brakes if they are rear mounted

Have your re-checked the axle nut to be sure it's to spec?

CG - Seems to be....the right is more noticeable first but the left one chimes in eventually.

Bullitt-- There is no play in the hub when I grab the wheel and test that way....for as much noise to happen as is happening, it would have to be noticeable that way.

CP- The calipers are front mounted but all that would mean (I think) is that one bracket would be taking the pressure versus the other one when mounted the other way.....right?

i ran out to NAPA for a new hardware kit.  On first look, it seems like their plates are stiffer.

Will try that and see what happens I guess.

yes , front mounted the lower part of the bracket takes the pressure so maybe installing the rubber band around the upper part would keep it from rattling

There is a great image and different from the one I had posted over on forabodiesonly.com......!

Still, now that I see how the rubber band goes, CAN NOT figure out WHY they have it!  LOL

Anyways, looks (so far) like the issue was CHEAP hardware that came with the pads.

The plates were very maleable. Very little pressure to bend them.

I went out and bought a new kit from NAPA and the plates are much harder and more like springs.

So far, so good....didnt try the REALLY bumpy roads yet but I think this definately helped.

You can say that again!

I think I still have a odd noise or two but sure seemed like the major ones were those calipers.

....all due to cheap chinese steel.   :banghead:

Hopefully it is solved.   :2thumbs:
