Good reusable valve cover gaskets?
« on: March 23, 2010 - 08:39:33 AM »
Have found that the reusable valve cover gaslets on my 318 (mopar aluminum valve covers) arent sealing that good...

Can anyone recommend a good set of reusables? Ones that will seal really well?

Not sure there is a good re-useable gasket.  Once used they are compressed and don't seal as well the second time around.   :dunno:

I guess I dont HAVE to use a reusable...I mean, aint nothing in there I will need access to over and over and over...

Just figured it would be nice to have that option....

Anyone know if the Mopar Arruminum covers use standard cover gaskets or if they are special?

I could be wrong but I think they should be replaced every time. For guys that remove the covers often it must get expensive.
I have the blue moroso gaskets and you can probably reuse them, but takes a lot of work to clean all the old stuff off them before reinstalling.
Paper type gaskets....forget it.

On my 440 they are the standard gaskets, I'm sure it's the same for you.  For what it's worth, the gaskets don't cost an arm and a leg, so I buy new each time. I also clean the area around heads good and put a small coat of RTV on each side of the gasket for a little insurance against an oil leak. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't have oil leaking from my valve covers either.

I always get metal core ones. They don't lose there shape by tightening. My truck has rubber coated ones, and the Challenger has cork.

Its not so much the expense as it is the convenience....you can pull the covers as needed and not have to scrape/clean and go out and buy new gaskets.

But like i said, seeing as I dont need to get in there anyways it more or less moot.

I may just use some permatex on the ones I have already (reusable) deal with it later.

I use the blue rubber coated metal core ones I got from Mancicni Racing.  Kinda expensive but I've had my valve covers on and off several times with no lead

I think the aluminum covers use the same gaskets (but the bolts are longer cause the flange is thicker)

They are a little pricy, I don't know why these went from $19.88 to $57.95 in one year, but they do work...

Maybe they were mis-priced initially?   :dunno:
