Upgrading from Points to Electronic Ign.
« on: March 23, 2010 - 01:34:56 PM »
I am upgrading my 340 from points to electronic ignition.  I purchased the Mopar Performance kit (distributor, ECU, ballast resistor, and wiring), but will I also need to upgrade my coil and plug wires? Is there anything else?

Don't we really need a sticky on the whole ignition/ECU thing ??

Yeah maybe we do
I would add a High Output coil ,spiral core wires are a good idea as well

Any recommendations on a coil (MSD, Accel), or particular output?  Is 45k enough?  I know JEGS and Summit have them but I'm sure I can also get this output from those at local parts houses like Autozone and NAPA.  Will any coil with the desired output range work or are some junk?

40-50Kv is a typical coil for electronic systems.  For "normal" use 40Kv is easily enough, but since your kit has come with a ballast resistor you need to get a coil with a primary impedance compatible with that or you will either get a poor spark (coil impedence too high) or risk overheating something (impedence too low), and probably still not have too good a spark either.

I would expect it to tell you in the kit, generally the coil impedence is rated at somewhere between equal to and double the resistance of the ballast.

if you are using the MSD coil & are not mounting it virtically as Most Mopars do you need to use the Vibration MSD as they will not leak when mounted horizontally

For now just hook up your new stuff to the old coil and start it up. You could have been running by now if you weren't so worried about what coil to use. I would have thrown that kit on as soon as I got the box open.
