hydroboost installed
« on: March 23, 2010 - 09:34:24 PM »
All I can say is wow! This thing now has some brakes. You just start touching the pedal and you're in whoa mode. Install was easy with the exception of having to reroute my downpipe. I'm into this setup for less than $160 with the new M/C.  Sorry if the pics are large.  Pete

I think the "$160" was a typo.

On CPP the universal kit with lines is $500. Custom kits for specific models (chevy) are waaaay more.  The cheap bastard in me was all excited and then reality hit....LOL   :money:

Or am I missing something?   :clueless:

That one is a pretty popular choice with the Buicks..the other is the original hb used in hot air cars....but, the Cardone rebuilts are iffy....$220-$250 that route with everything required.

Ok, yes I pulled  this unit out of picknpull for less than $30. Now if you're thinking it is a crap shoot, well maybe it is, but considering a booster rebuild kit is 50 some odd dollars, I really don't think it is. The M/C shipped to my house (incl shipping) was only $89 and that's for a brand new disc/disc unit, and thats plated or unplated.  The unit I pulled was very clean, meaning no leaks(see pic). I pulled the mounting plate and pushrod with it. I used the 4 bolt to 2 bolt adapter I already had as my pattern and made a mounting plate for the conversion(see pic). One of the real lucky features about this and a surprise was that the booster mounting face to pushrod hole center was the same as that of the original, so the only thing I had to do there was to open the hole up to the same size as the cuda pushrod hole.  Now the pushrod is narrower at the point where it mounts to the pedal. So I got 4 washers that were the same size OD as the round face at the end, this way the light switch still works. After that you pull the line off your power steering box and run it to the booster then another line back to the steering box. There is one more line which is a low pressure line and just tee's into the return line from the steering box. Believe me this was simple and there are a lot of drawings and posts about this same thing for other vehicles on the web. As You can see I did pull the acumulator off and polished it out. But in my bay it would've looked out of place as a brass finish. Pete

Someday - I used the same GM setup but used the original mounting plate and stood the unit forward off the firewall by 1" using a solid aluminum block drilled to suit. By moving it forward I used the original pedal bellcrank setup that is there for the vacuum booster. Had to shorten that pedal rod you show in the picture, thread it to 3/8"NF and add a locknut and HEIM end to fit the bellcrank. Advantage is the rod pushes straight into the HB plunger (not on an angle) and less leverage so the unit is not like pushing the airbrake pedal on an empty semi - very sensitive and the pedal effort is a little harder which sounds bad here but drive the car and see. So far I have braked down from 105MPH and it is like a new car or better and no locking of the wheels.
What MC did you use as I want to discard that silly double reservoir setup that the booster came with and go with the single reservoir unit. Am thinking an 82 Dodge 1/2 ton pickup might work.
