I've read the old posts and understand that discharging at idle is fairly common (I recently put relays on my headlights - it helped as they stay nice & bring now :)      But -- I recently invested in an original AMFM and installed it (I sent out to Wards first - so it should be fine) but it doesn't put out the volume it should -- also the volume decreases at idle and picks up when I rev the motor (but still not as strong as it should).   Any ideas on what is causing this?

As to the radio volume, what kind of speakers are you using?  Any speaker will have lowered output if the polarity is reversed.   If you read any of my charging system posts you already know to burnish all connections, my car does not discharge at idle in gear.

For the radio volume issue to be a car problem as opposed to a faulty radio, the voltage would have to be fluctuating a fair bit. Disconnect the radio and check the voltage @ idle and when running. I would tend to think it is the radio though. Speakers wired correctly and of the right type?

I read on the web that says that some alternator rebuilders were using the higher output armature with the lower output housings, not knowing the difference, causing the low output at idle.  Have you tried a couple of different alternators?
