Inspection Markings?
« on: March 28, 2010 - 06:14:22 PM »
I'm not sure if I'm in the right section for this but does anyone know where to find pictures or an authentic account of  inspection makings? GM has lots of them so Mopar must have had some, I'd like to duplicate as many as possible but I want to be correct about it.

No two cars are exactly the same, so.....

The rule of thumb for an OE style restoration is to document the ones you find on the car in question & then put them back.

Not much left on either one of my cars to go by. seems like along the line someone would have documented a few original cars markings. even it it wasn't perfect it would look better than nothing, it adds a lot to a car.

Adding stuff that was not on the car pushes it into the custom category vs. a true restoration.

I have seen cars with so much of that stuff added to them that they look ridiculous.

There are restoration "guides" out there that show locations/colors of inspection marks that have been found on survivors but are meant to be a "guide".

Only put back the marks that you found on your own car.  Anything else is just a guess and not correct.  Some cars had a lot of marks but others would have had very few.  Use the car itself as your restoration "guide".

If you knew the proper marking off a 70 big block Challenger, and you had a 70 big block challenger I don't see how you could be that far out of line, and if you were since nobody knows they would be hard pressed to prove you wrong. problem is it seems unlike Ford and GM there isn't a good place to find this out.

I guess I'll watch for survivor car pictures and try to determine a pattern that follows through. I agree over doing it would detract from the car but some proper markings would be a plus.

From my experience, my T/A was VERY original when I bought it over 20 years ago. It has very few paint daubs.

The low mile T/A I took 100s of photos off had more paint daubs, but some were present on both cars that the other car did not have.

So, if you car is not in a condition to note what it DID come with, then no one in the world can tell you what it came with either, so best of luck.
