71 Challenger Z bar
« on: March 28, 2010 - 07:08:03 PM »
I am going to replace my transmission this wk with a rebuilt one from Passon.  My 71 challenger was transformed to a 440 4 sp. from 318 auto. Problem, THE Z bar where the fork rod connects to is app 2 in lower than the clutch fork. know thats not correct. I dont know what was put on it. Any suggestion which is wrong z bar or clutch fork. It works ok but I want to fix it while I have trans out.

Need some better pictures that could be taken with the camera a little further out. Better to show the Z-bar and the fork together. Looks like it could be the z-bar from what I can see. Springs are incorrect as well.

Could be the wrong clutch fork pivot.  Here are some photos identifying different clutch/trans parts.

CG Is this a display that you have access to or a picture? If you have the display can you measure from the bottom of the z bar shaft to the bottom of the arm that the adjuster rod connects? Thanks

4" sounds about right, its certainly not 1.5" (4"-2.5").  I'll bet you have the wrong pivot.

Is the torque shaft (z-bar is a chevy term) horizontal with the ground?  It should be.

yes it is. This is my first mopar. Restored several chevelle ss cars. This car has definitely been an education! I will check the pivot when I remove the trans. If the clutch fork is suppose to be parallel it is. I really dont understand how it mounts inside the bellhousing. To line up with the torque shaft it would have to come down that 1.5 " and then it would not be parallel. I suppose I'll find out when I take it apart !

The clutch fork is "clocked" around by the pivot.  Different years/bodies use a different pivot to locate the fork in the correct position.

I received my trans from Passon yesterday and removed mine today. Here is a pic of the pivot inside the bellhousing  and a pic of the bellhousing stud for the torque shaft.  The fork is 10 7/8 " from end to end. I have a 513 bellhousing. thanks for any help !
