440 Shortblock and Build Questions

So I just picked up a 440 with the rotating assembly it has already been bored .030 over and I think it has .010 undersized mains. My real question is what do I need to complete this engine. All I have is the block, crank, caps, rods, pistons, and rear main seal. Also I noticed a small scratch that looks like it was done by some tool in one of the cylinders that is just enough to feel with my finger nail. Would this cause problems or should I try to hone it away first with that dingleberry thing. I have a picture of it and it looks like a crack in the picture but isn't. Also since the block has been sitting awhile it has collected some dust and dirt. What would be the best way to clean it? Should I get it hot tanked or boiled and would this ruin the cam bearing which I think I will be replacing anyway.

Gee - that almost looks like a crack in the bore. If it was a scratch it would be more straight. Maybe I am seing that because of the picture.

Its the picture I've looked at it with a flash light really good and its just some weird tool mark that can just barely be caught with your fingernail.

sure looks like a crack...maybe get your machine shop to look at it  :)

Get your block magnafluxed ASAP.

I just checked again and it is definitely a tool mark, you can even see where the tool hopped and didn't make as deep or any mark in places.

get it magnafluxed anyway regardless of what the mark is. An engine is no place to take shortcuts. Probably a couple hundred bucks to get done.

Cant see the pics, but a magnaflux is the only way to know about an unknown block. Regardless of appearance.

Thanks for the list, I'll probably get it magnafluxed just to be sure.
Also I am going to be raping my current 400 for some parts, but not many I still want it to be sealed so its internally clean.
I will be taking
The rocker arms and shafts
All the pulleys and accessories that fit
Timing Cover
Distributor hold down bracket and bolt
And probably some misc. little parts

You can buy a Magnaflux kits for much less than a couple of hundred bucks. Or take it to a machine shop and get it MT'd. Magnaflux crack check dye penetrant is a 3 part process and the kits come with 3 cans: cleaner (which is nothing more than acetone or isopropyl alcohol, penetrant (a red colored dye) and developer (a white powered substance). The surface is cleaned with the cleaner (make sure it's VERY clean; no grease or dirt), then sprayed with penetrant dye, whiped thoroughly dry and then sprayed with developer. IF there is a crack, it will show up as a thin red line. If not, no lines! I just purchased a crack finder kit from Silver Seal for about $45 bucks plus shipping. I had overheated a Bosch aluminum engine and blew a head gasket. I of course had to check the block and heads for cracks and used the kit. Magnaflux is expensive and an identical product such as the one made by Silver Seal is much cheaper. You can do a Google for "dye penetrant" or Google "Silver Seal" to get to the web site. An invaluable tool for engine builders!! It's very easy to use and requires no special tools. just follow the instructions. Good luck & i hope it's not a crack!! :2thumbs:

If it is a crack, (which it looks like) it can be repaired.

Thanks, I figure worst case I could probably get that cylinder sleeved and still be ahead for what I paid. But I really do not think it is a crack you can see where it starts and stops a couple times from what I think is the tool skipping and it looks wider than a crack.
