    Almost afraid to open this pandora's box, but will anyways...LOL

    I did an oil change the other day in my 318 and all went well.

    When I was revving it up a bit, I found that I get some tapping noise (seems like pass. side, top end).....none at idle....rev it up and then let off, and I get the tapping for a bit then it goes away.   If I rev and hold, I kind of hear it.....

    Oil flow related I assume....?? Or maybe just a slightly worn rocker or rod or lifter?

    I dont recall having the noise before the oil change but not sure I didnt.

    I used 10w30 oil, and a Mopar MO-090 oil filter.

    I have non adjustable rockers.

    Any thoughts?

    Did you use an oil with zinc? Can't recall the code...CI4, maybe?

    I used Quaker State oil......big green jug.

    So is a zinc additive the way to go maybe?  I saw one advertised in a mag today...

    Zinc additive, or an oil with zinc, is one possibility. Jsut a quick guess on my part.

    I have never been a fan of Q State oils , just feels to watery coming out warm , all new oils are junk , any SM rated oil is not recommended for older engines Period , I have been using agricultural Diesel SJ rated oil 15-40W instead , I may become a dealer for the new Z Alt SG oil as well

    Think the oil itself could be the cause of the noise?

    In another thread I posted that I used a MOPAR filter, thinking i was doing good....then come to find its a FRAM filter!

    So basically the oil change I just did could be wasted.

    I can definitely say the the quality control at Fram is not up to par. I've heard good things about Wix filters.

    I just hope you aren't barking up the wrong tree and it's an exhaust leak. Try tightening the manifold or header on that side first before you mess with the oil.  I've been down that road.   :grinyes:

    I doubt the oil is causing the noise , but it is still important to know about , I would be looking at exhaust leaks first as well

    Gotcha...will check the headers and manifold again.

    I am going to try and not obsess over it......note I said "try" LOL

    You dont really hear it with the hood closed, sitting in the car......only when I have my head under the hood....so it may have been there all along and I never noticed...

    I think I am still going to get that ZDDPLUS stuff...seems that the general consensus is that we need zinc in our oil if we have flat tappets, which I assume I do....would rather spend the $15 and add it and not need it than NOT use it and find out I needed it.....besides, "Big Daddy" Don Garlits is plugging for it, so it must be good, right?  LOL   :bigsmile:

    In my opinion (I'm not a petroleum Engineer), there is no way using an oil without zinc or using a Fram filter would immediately cause an already broken in cam, a lobe/lifter problem.  This is especially true if you are running anything close to a stock valve spring.  In fact, I don't think it would cause a problem in 50k miles with a stock spring (hasn’t with mine).

    True, the zinc or lack of it rather is probably not the cause....since I noticed the noise right after the oil change...

    The filter question, though, I still wonder about....if the filter isnt flowing as well, etc????

    But like I said earlier, I use the mopar filters on my other dodge vehicles and no issues so far....fingers crossed.

    Any results on your noise????  Same thing just happened to me on my 426.  I changed my oil ( 1st change ) and now have a noise coming from the head area??
