71 cuda with no horn relay
« on: April 02, 2010 - 06:32:36 PM »
Hey Guys,
I started off with no taillights.  I got he t/s switch and did the quickie plug in, and now have lights.  Since I have to pull the steering wheel, I thought I may as well as replace it with a tuff wheel.  And as long as I am replacing the wheel, I may as well get the horns working.  I do not have a horn relay plugged into my fuse block.  I think that is where it should be.  I ordered one from year one for a 71, but they sent me a relay with 3 terminals on one side, and nothing on the other like the fuse block takes and it has a bracket welded to it.  It does not look like a 70.  Does it need the fourth terminal?  If so, I cant find one very easily.  Does anyone have a lead for me to follow up to get something that will work?  I plugged the year one relay in, but no horns.  I did test the horns off of the battery with positive results.  I didn't do much investigation of the wires since I still don't have the correct relay (maybe?).  Any help for the newbie?  Thanks

IF your 71 is like my 73 the extra plug is for the key in buzzer, not a desirable sound. The 3-terminal relay should work for horn if their in the right locations.

Without actually seeing the relay and the fact it has a bracket attached, the bracket could be the negative or ground and has to be screwed to the body of the car. The 3 terminals should be 1.. a trigger wire,  2..  from + 12v,  3..  to the horn.

How would I ground the relay if there is no bracket to bolt it to?  I could always run a simple ground wire to the body, but wouldnt it be better to just find the correct horn relay?  Now if I only knew where to get one.  Thanks

Don't know what to tell you...a few years ago everyone listed the 4-prong relay/buzzer, now all that shows is the '70 3-prong & later model 3-prong which is the one I believe will work...Make it work or start shopping used or NO$.

Yours look like this/

I havent really checked the entire horn circuit either.  I  have to do some wire checking for continuity.  I have a couple of places to check out for the horn relay yet.  Worst case scenario is that I take the horns out to get rid a little clutter under the hood.  But I really hope to fix it right.

You mentioned in your original post that there was a bracket mounted on the relay, attach it to the body.   :2cents:

I just ordered a horn relay from Penstar.  Part # pr021.  215-957-1622.  When I called, I asked for a 71 cuda horn relay.  Dude says " the four pin with out the bracket?"  He found one in stock, described it to me, and now is sending it out.  $11!!!!  I hope it is what he says it is.  Ill let you guys know when I get it.

Hi Guys,
I put the $11 horn relay in and IT WORKS!!!  Buzzer and horns.  I put in a tuff wheel and every thing is good.  Turn signal switch was easy and so was the steering wheel.  I wont be afraid to do that again.  My passenger side brake lights are still a little dimmer than the driver side.  Any reasons?

Check the grounding of the body to the light, check to make sure there is no corrosion inside the light socket and make sure that the globes are the same wattage both sides.
