More Stereo DIY....Project: Get My Trunk Back/Sub-Box Build

History- Test V-1.0 was to hook up an old 10" home stereo sub-in-a-box to the existing equipment, result was far less than satisfactory. Added an amp to power...result was OK but the driver was obliviously struggling with the extra power...Upgraded to a higher end driver, sounded good but the huge box was not going to fit in the trunk soooo I went to chopping & came up with a feasible solution.

V-1.3

The sound was way ahead of anything I have ever owned but tended to be boomy, took up too much trunk even though the box's volume was way too small. Every reference I found suggested 1.0-cubic foot was ideal... So the plan came together to create from scratch a sub-box made to fit....

V-2.0 Is Born

MDF & 10" db Drive from the interior

Box coming together from trunk..Secret ingredient *Counter Top Bolts*

All together & functional...Oh yea I bought a bigger amp.

But I have to keep it turned down or buzz my low end drivers.

End result is a box approximately 0.9-CF, slightly smaller than ideal but information found on the net suggested that dampening material will make a box behave larger as well as tighten the bass while getting rid of the boom. After initial sound test without dampening I decided that I might benefit from adding, so a generous layer of poly-fill went in, this seems to have had the desired result.

Sound is cleaner than before & able to bring the volume higher before distortion. Definitely the Healthiest Sound System I have ever owned.

Also I got a lot of trunk space back, another inch & this 275/60-17 would not have fit.

B,,So far everything looks to be ok. You need to put some poly-fill in your enclosure so the sub thinks it is in a bigger box. If you leave the sub firing in to the rear of the seat make sure the sub has room to move with that metal so close at the top. Take a few strips of dynamat along the cross beams and that top piece. This will help stop unwanted rattles. Now you said you took out a house sub to test with. You are going to some strange feed back, because it was an 8ohm speaker. Not quite what they recomend to do with the amp.Now it looks like you have a good sub. Is the amp board going to be the back of the sub box? Once you get the poly-fil and tidy up the wires with split loom it would be a very good looking install!

I used some rubber doughnuts to mount the speaker board to isolate & create space, seat is not an issue...& your right on with needing to dynomat the metal, its bzzzzin pretty bad so that's on my list. I'll get the wires dealt with in time.

Rubber doughnuts was a great trick. after dynamatted everything should stop buzzzin. Are you planning to cover the trunk facing side of the box? If covered with automotive dark charcol carpet in the trunk and that will be a very sealth install. Those are the best!!!

Eventually when I have to decide on which way to go in the trunk I'll cover the wood. I'm thinking leaving the amps exposed for air circulation is best ?!?!?. stealth would preferred..Ideas? ....

In the mean time, I'm shopping 6X9's....more amp than my cheapies could handle, done blowed em up playing Bluegrass .

I would cover the back of the box with the amp board. Then build the amp board to look like they are flush mounted. Cover with the dark carpet and it will look great. The depth of the amps from the bottom board to the top cover board will help with heat and air circulation. Staying within a decent budget,,you might look at some Sony Xplod 6x9's. Hell-mart I mean Wal-Mart carries a couple different sets. In my opinion they would work out great for your install. They can handle some power pretty well. Worth a look at least.

Bluegrass? Thats awesome! I lived in Bill Monroe country for a few years and loved every minute of it. May i ask who you was jammin' to? Banjo and stand-up bass make a deadly couple for speakers.

Hey Wade.......all I ask is that you make sure your license plate is isolated, (mounted on rubber too).......We have so many cars up here that every time the bass hits...........the letters almost vibrate off............
