Best radial tires for 70 Challenger T/A
« on: April 03, 2010 - 07:45:55 PM »
Hello...I am brand new to this message board having just bought a 1970 Challenger T/A.  I absolutely love this car.    The car is pretty much complete with only about 14,000 original miles.  I would like to put radial tires on the car.  What would you all recommend as the best tires and what about the size?  Also, what wheels would you all recommend?  Thanks and look forward to being a member of this board.

Welcome aboard candyman.      Best tire may depend more on what size rim you need to fit.. Goodyear makes a few 15" as well as Firestone.  Most end up with BF Goodrich because of the many sizes they offer.
Wheels for a T/A were the 15X7 or 15X8 Rallye I believe.  If your not wanting to stay stock the skies about the limit on wheel & tire choices .

I am not a fan of BFG , I hsve seen 14" steps int he tread where the belts overlap on new tires , they have poor traction but they are easy to get . For an alternative there is Cooper , Dean Stinger, Kelly ,Maxxis , Nitto , Daytona, Hankook , unfortuantly I have no experience with any of these except Cooper , Deans & Hankook & most of all the Nitto , the nitto makes an excellent street legal drag radial , the rest are decent tires

Always had good luck with radial T/A's. Your car is a T/A as well!

Had BFG T/A's on both my old 70 440 chally and the 318 cuda and loved them. Tried some goodyears and they were the suck. All were 275-15's. Whatever you decide to get check the date code on the back of the tires first. Lot's of 6-10 YO tires are being sold and there's no buyer recourse. It's legal.....

I`ve run the BFG`s with no problems for 10+ years and now have the drag radials in back.It may just be me but I could never put tire named Nitto or Hancook on an old American musclecar-it just seems wrong!

Never been a fan of the BFG if you are wanting performance in a tyre, they look alright and there are plenty of sizes around. Should be OK for a cruiser then.

I tried Firestone's on my Big block Buick and for the money I'm happy with them. It's hard to get good sticky rubber in 15" sizes so unless your getting new rims 16" or bigger you options are limited somewhat. I had found with BFG TA's they go hard like a hockey puck after 6-12 months and then traction really sucks! So depends what your after I guess?

BFG has tire plants in the US and is owned by Michelin. Nitto is owned by Toyo tire.
