$70.00 an hour labor rate x 6 guys in my shop 45 hours per week. My workers make $15.00 an hour. Parts and supplies get dropped at my front door. I own the building . Do the math. I don't soak my customers on the material end . Never have - never will.

I don't know what kind of business you run but I have mine pretty much nailed down.

Not sure what you are trying to show with those figures......

But since you did provide them, look at it this way then.....

Would/could one of your guys , working at $15.00/hr (gross, right?), afford to waste $50 needlessly?  AFter Uncle sam and taxes take their cut, they make, what....$10/hr?   $50...Thats 5 hours of work. Ask around your shop, and my guess is they would be in my shoes.  :2thumbs:

72Cudaman, I agree that markup is a necessity...it is what keeps businesses in business.

If every had the same amount of markup, it would make shopping fruitless.  But thats not the case.  Some places can charge less than others, based on their budgets and such.  Thats all well and good.  As a consumer, I also have a budget.  My budget dictates I save $50 if I can save $50 , or even $15, if it is for the SAME thing.

Note I said SAME thing.

I realize there are different manufacturers of bumpers. I realize that some places sell 'seconds' cheaper, etc.

I am not inferring that Roseville's bumpers are exactly the same as YO's and that Roseville is "just" marking them up.  Or maybe they are.

Right now, I dont KNOW what Roseville is selling, brand wise, only that Dave does "quality check" prior to shipping.  YO told me the same thing. Dave said his have "near show quality" chrome....YO told me the same thing.  Right now, the price is the difference.  In order for me to make an educated decision, to save $50 or spend $50, I need more info.

That is what this thread was started to uncover, and I would be grateful if we could get back to that subject.....

....finding out the best bumper for a given amount of money.

Thanks guys

I don't want to Jack the thread but I have a 1973 Cuda and need to know if a 1970 Cuda bumper front & rear will mount to my car? Do I have to buy a different bumper mounts? The chrome bumpers I have are in great shape. I only ask because I can't seem to find the bumper fillers being sold by anyone & mine are not looking so great!

Shadango if you like the quality of the bumpers you order I might just order from the same place. I don't want second rate bumpers I want something show quality.

You will need the 70-72 bumper brackets as well as the bumpers to move the bumpers inward if you want to remove the bumper fillers.

From what I have read else where, the best way to get a good bumper is to use a good original core and have it rechromed (big $$...like $500 up)....that said, once I get some feedback from Roseville and another vendor, I hope to buy.

Accually, if you don't mind drilling out a couple existing holes in your origonal bumper brackets, you don't have to buy anything.  You can keep your origonal bumper and everything.  There are a few square holes in the brackets that get drilled out to 5/8".  That will let you move the brackets back.

Wow!  This one's become a lot of fun.  I'll jump...

So, if you never mark up your costs and you only charge $70/hr, how are you making any money?  The word "employees" implies multiple, so potentially 25-50% of your cost is wrapped in labor.  You said half the cars at your shop are yours, so it sounds you must've been independently wealthy to begin with...otherwise, why waste shop $$$ having your employees work on your stuff, not customer stuff.

I do see that you're saving money by not having (or listing) a phone number under Oxford Motorsports in New York, NY.  Good financial move, except how do "customers" get ahold of you?

In regard to real E-body owners who try to save a buck or two, I'll try every time.  Those who have seen my car know where I saved and where I splurged.  Yet, the trophies and calendar appearances continue despite my worst efforts.

Like many here, I've developed a great relationship with several vendors by simply acknowledging that I'm looking for the best deal for both of us.  If you're up front about it (as Shadango is), you'll develop a reputation as a solid customer, not a tire-kicking, braggart, know-it-all who says one thing and does something entirely different.

Hey Dave

I am ready to buy a front bumper....I believe I need a 70-71.(My car is a 72 but has no slots)

"Year One is giving 15% off bumpers with the ebody sale code....with shipping I am looking at $278.

Can you match that price for the "almost show chrome, non reject" versions you are talking about, and can you ship it out today ? I like the idea that you are QC them prior to shipping and would rather buy from "the little guy" if you can."

This is what started this whole thing. Calling a vendor out on his prices on this thread. That's what the PM's are for. But you should all know that. Then he calls Dave a "little guy". Slamdingo :stirpot: insults him by calling him a little guy and then wants Dave to cut his price. If you wanted to support the "little guy" YOU WOULD BY HIS PRODUCT. Period.

I'm new to this forum. I posted two 71 Cuda grilles under parts for sale and immediately drew a slick comment from one of the regulars. (The grilles sold post EBAY). So I started reading and there appears to be a few people who think they are slick posting on the boards. So if you are going to take shots at people - you're fair game yourself. :stirpot:

I posted my haggle comment in support of Dave. He's a good guy and cares about the product he sells. Support his business - buy his parts. His prices are in the ballpark and he takes time to respond to you on these boards. :ylsuper:

I only mentioned my business in response to a slick comment directed towards me earlier in this thread. With 6 full time employees billing $70.00 an hour a piece the shop pulls over 16k a week. I don't mark up paint, parts and material costs for my customers. They are delivered to my door. The customer gets a break and I get their business. HOW DO YOU FIGURE I DON'T MAKE MONEY. I clear $55.00 an hour for each employee. ($15 an hour pay per employee). So where are you lost? :clueless:

And last but not least, NewYorkCustoms is my business that I sell my own restored vehicles through in Manhattan and Long Island NY. I have multiple vehicles of my own being restored here at my shop (Oxford Miss)and I run them through here just like a customers. So when a vehicle is sold after restoration - there is a full and detailed bill of work that was performed and my cost. I don't just restore a vehicle and wing it. I must know my bottom line. Not to mention the tax end of the situation running NYC vehicles through OMS.

Good luck to you.

Why do you feel the need to continue to drag my thread into the dirt?

Well, might as well do it right....since I was your original target and it was my thread til you jacked it, I will kill it myself.

Wow....THATS mature. No one has made it personal til you just did.....up til now, all that was questioned was info that you yourself provided.

So now you are the umpire, making sure no one steps out of line on this forum?

No, I didnt "start" anything....I asked a question of a vendor I have dealt with before...one that is a known good member of this forum...someone who answers questions and provides info...someone who doesn't mind answering question except when some ass turns an innocent question into a flame.  I really don't see the harm of asking it publicly really, as Dave has been asked this sort of thing before -- i.e. "whats your best price"...but ok, as I already said maybe it would have been best left to a PM.  YOU "started this" by opening your rude trap and insulting ME publicly. THAT would have been better done thru a PM too, dontcha think? Why couldn't you have just let it be?

Insulting him?  You sir, are coming across like a jackass.    Re-read my post...if you take it as an insult to be called "the little guy, then too bad for you.  And just because I would rather by my product from what I consider the "little guy", that doesnt mean I dont consider price.  If you blindly pay any price without asking questions then that's cool for you.  I shop for the best product at the best price and would rather buy from someone I know when I can.  Bite me hard if ya dont like my approach.  Its not your wallet I am dipping in to.  It's my wife's.    :smilielol:

being new to a forum and already drawing "slick" comments? What does that tell ya?

I started reading too...and many of your posts seem to have a "holier than though" approach to them.  Believe it or not, even at age 47 , you are not the be-all, end-all authority on body work.  We have some folks on this forum who probably have more knowledge on body work in their middle finger than you do in your whole body.  That said, maybe you know your crap.....wonderful to have more good info on this forum.....and I am sure everyone would welcome it.  What is NOT welcome is how you assert yourself and bully folks.

If  one of "The regulars" made a "slick comment"  (and who really says "slick" anymore?) then you deserved it.  This forum is habitated by some of the best people I have ever known, willing to help out someone they dont even know at the drop of a hat...I cant tell ya how much help these guys have been towards me in just the 15 months I have been on here....and one thing I have learned is that they have an uncanny way as a group of being spot-on when it comes to figuring out the antics of a bullying type poster.....their BS radar works well too.

I am pretty sure we all know that already.  I care about where I spend my money. IF I DIDNT WOULD I BE EVEN ASKING HIM To MATCH A PRICE?  DUH!!!!!  So you dont like my asking him if he can come down on his price.  Well la-dee-freaking-dah for you.

I have bought a few parts from Dave before and will again. Whether Dave can work his price some or not wont affect my considering him for future purchases.  He is a good vendor whom I trust.  Frankly, I have also dealt with Year One and had good experiences.

Howzabout MINDING YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS unless I ask YOU to adjust your price?

Dave doesn't need defended. If my question were that out of line, do you think "the regulars" would let it stand?

This forum is a family of sorts and Dave is certainly part of it.

Seems that no one was offended by my question to Dave....not even Dave...at least not enough to drag this on and on, except for you.  Why is that?  Ask yourself that question.

You mention your business every time you post, getting a free ad every time your business name (aka your handle) is mentioned.  Maybe that is the real goal here?

SO wait.....you brag that you don't mark up parts on your customers but you "clear $55 an hour" for labor?  Assuming you know that "clear" usually means "after all overhead and expenses, you are making $55/hr  for just sitting on your ass in the office after paying your hard working guys only a lousy $15 an hour?   If that's whatcha mean , you should be ashamed...how is that any different than marking up prices "just cause you can" ?

I dont begrudge a man making a decent living.  But when he comes onto a public forum and starts lambasting someone for trying to save $50 in a $300 ballpark transaction and in the same breath brags how he "clears" $55 a hour profit on the backs of $15/hr employees...well, I have little respect for that guy .  You infer that I am trying to screw over the "little guy.........hmmmpphh.....seems like you are screwing over the little guy every time a customer comes into your door.

Even if you still have to pull out overhead of that $55/hr per employee, seems to me that you are the one screwing the little guy, not me, and doing so on the backs of your employees.

Hmmmmm.  Yoiu have to consider your "bottom line".  Seems to me that someone else.....I think it was "Slamdingo"....explained that concept earlier.

But maybe cause you are a "business" that makes it ok.

Yeah, and we are all slackers.

You talk a great game and seem to think pretty damn high of yourself.

Well, whoopdeedoo.

So far all I see is a guy who like to bully others and comment in places he should just keep his trap shut.

Part if being a decent human being is knowing when you have said too much and just letting it go.

You are not entitled to just horn in on a thread and say whatever you wnat just cause you can. You have contributed NOTHING to this thread aside from bullying and antagonizing.

You may be 47, but you dont seem to be all that mature for 47.

You may be great at what you do. You may be a great person in real life.  But the way you make yourself come across on this forum so far is not flattering.

You may think you are a success.  But if you treat all people this way then I submit that you are not as successful as you percieve yourself to be.

Clearly you have destroyed my thread.  Thanks for nothing. I was asking for legit feedback and all you have done is bully and antagonize.

You come off as just trying to stir the pot and make trouble where there is none.

You took a civil question /thread and turned it ugly.

They have a name for that sort of behavior online......TROLL.

Well, jokes on you I guess, since "Slamdingo" isnt the one defending himself anymore, its now you.

Of course, I just wasted a half hour on this, so maybe the joke is on me too...wasting my time addressing someone who clearly is just a troublemaker.

I wont myself bother to post any further to you in this thread.   I have already wasted enough of my life on you.

Good day.
