master cylinder question
« on: April 06, 2010 - 11:02:43 AM »
I have a 70 chall was originally a 318 car with drum brakes all around.  I ordered a new mastercylinder for drum brakes.  It doesn't seem to fit the firewall.  I took it back and was assured it was the right one.  Is there something I am missing?  The car has been apart for awhile and now it is painted and I am putting it back together.  Any clues?  Thanks, Danny

My main pc is in the shop, can't do pics now.  I have looked at photos on line here and it seems there is a plate that I am missing.  It looks like that there is a plate mounted to the firewall that the master cylinder bolts to.  Is that correct?  This is off a 70 chall with standard drum brakes.  If there is a plate I am missing where would I find One? Thanks, Danny

Does that mean that drum brakes were standard on the cars and that power was an upgrade, or that he has manual brakes :)  I was going to offer him a plate for power brakes as I changed mine to manual...or standard :D

Strawdog, I was assuming manual brakes were standard.  I have manual brakes.  I can't find the plate for mine and I haven't seen any.  If it hadn't been for Neil I wouldn't have known it had one.  Why did you switch yours from power to manual?  Thanks, Danny   I am hoping I will be driving this car in a month or two (hoping).

Vacuum is too low to operate the booster properly...really need close to 15 in/hg to have sufficient reserve...both from my experience and the brake companies :) I have 8 at the moment...these cars were easy to stop without power assist and I liked the feel better than the power brakes.

Glad you found the plate.  It took me awhile to find one on ebay :)
