440 transplant.
« on: April 07, 2010 - 01:32:08 AM »
Now that my steering has been sorted :swear: Im onto the 440 transplant. Im in the process of buying a 440 and i need a few parts and lots of help? The motor has been fully rebuilt cast crank, reco standard heads, mopar purple cam? Speed pro pistons etc etc. I need a manifold, carby, dizzy and extractors/headers? Im running a 4 speed with an 8 3/4 diff. I just checked my box and it matches my serial number  The numbers are A4 c 99129 h....pp833300901?2. I hope this is a good box? Id tag says its a heavy duty 1? I will purchase a high torque starter....looking for recommendations on that? I need a bell housing, clutch setup and engine mounts. Can anybody help me with suppliers for these parts and any info needed? I see there are hooker headers in the summit catalouge for around $250,are these good for clearance and all the usual problems? I have read about the tti headers on here but they are around $900!!!!!!!!! Any help really appreciated  :2thumbs:

The only headers I can recommend are the TTi & Dougs , Hookers are a poor fit at best , & by the time you buy & replace a couple of ign wire sets you will have eaten up the difference in cost of buy a good set .
I Only Use McLeod Clutches , the B&B / Long 3 finger work the best
the Bets intake is the Holley Street Dom Period , botht the intake & clutch can be purchased through Summit
The Bets carb I have found is the Proform , They are avaialble at Mancini racing for less than the cost at Summit , I would use a 850 double pump carb . Mancini also has the Poly Loc engine mounts which will not pull apart & the electronic conversion kit with dist wiring & ECU , buy the higher priced Mopar kit so you get the fully adjustable dist & for a few more $$ you can swap to a Chrome ECU .
the starter is just a regular mini series from the 88 up Dodge V8 or V6 trucks & vans
Brewers has the belhousing brand new for $300 which is generally lower thaan I have seen it used at swap meets damaged

I contacted Brewers Performance and they got right back to me. They asked if the 440 was neuteral balanced? Im not sure what that means? Ive heard of external and internal balanced but still cant make any sense of it all? Being an original 318/4 speed car i can use the flywheel and they will sell a bellhousing to bolt straight up. Easy :)

the cast crank 440 is externally balanced
the steel crank 440 is internally balanced
the flywheel will work as long as you have an internally balanced steel crank 440

Thanx,Brewers say i can still use my flywheel but it needs to be balanced. I have a small shudder when releasing my clutch so i will have to get it machined as well. Ive spoken to a few people about the 850 dp and they are worried about overkill? I do love the look of the carb but :droolingbounce: wish the purple was green :) Could it be a bit on the big side Cryco?

As I keep saying they put 950 CFM 6 packs onto 340s so why would a properly tuned 850 be too big on a a much bigger 440 ??
 It works , Ask MEK

imop) not to cause anny confusion , the engine is practically stock for all those parts mentioned , what are the specs on the cam shaft / what compression and is the pistion all the way up at approx zero deck?, to buy 2in headers and a 850 carb for a stock engine is a bit excessive for a street cruiser. just my 2 cents Bill
