What do you guys think about the Edelbrock Performer RPM parts for the intake and cam? 

Cam is part # 7177 and the intake is 7176

the Eddy RPM intake is good , there are better cam choices from Lunati

Air Gap is the best intake all around. Disapates heat very well, pulls hard on low end and has great flow for top end, less heat soak issues etc.

I think comp cams makes great cams fyi for what you are looking to do.

On my other 340 build I have a highly modded set of x heads and huge crane solid cam, but this is in a stroker 416 and in a low weight 64 Dart with a very high stall convertor.

Also my static compression is near 12:1.

Last question for you on your build, what head gaskets are you going with? Maybe I missed it, i would say go cometic...

Thx.  I have not gotten to the head gaskets yet.  I have friends helping me with the build, and the machinist might want to have a say in that.  What do you recommend?

I got a quote for $1500 for all the machining and parts I need to build the short block from a local guy who has a good rep for building race engines.

Now I just need to find the $$ and I'll be  :working:

I still don't have any $$$ I need to catch up on orders at work..  but am still in the planning stages.  Besides the 318 is running fine for now. 


What do you guys think about a roller cam?

Get COMEIC head gaskets, better sealing, stronger etc...

They are a little thicker too, so that needs to figure into the compression factor if you are on the low side? If so mill the heads .020 or so to get in the 10:1 range for a street car with a decent cam...

Thanks I will check out the Cometic gaskets when I gather the parts for the build. I will check with the machinist and figure out the compression ratio and how much the block needs to be milled and what heads I end up going with.

I just read in past month that I thiink Comp has a new roller that requires no block machining.

Depending on power etc the roller is designed to have faster steeper ramps for high lift short duration, and the main advantage is less wear than a solid cam. On a hyd cam you have limits etc in terms of rpm and lift speed etc.

All depends on what your final goal is for street/ strip, rpm range, gearing and trans options.

What is it you want in terms of total HP and TQ from the engine and and what rpm to you expect to get there at?

Best bang for the $$ is to make her a stroker 416 .30 over 340 with a 4" stroke forged crank and better robds.

450-500 HP and very streetable is a piece of cake on the that route. And with the bigger cubes you will need something in the 268-280 range and 525-550 lift in terms of a cam , again depending on the goal buddy:)

I'm looking for around 4-425 hp 400+ ft lbs tq. 

I have the stock forged crank and rods I am more than likely going to use.  Hyperutectic pistons and probably the iron Indy/RHS heads with as much work on that as I can afford.  Maybe Edelbrock aluminum heads.  Edelbrock performer rpm intake, headers and carb as yet to be determined.

If you go alum on heads raaise compression 1 pt to compensate.

I used ROSS forged 10.5 pistons, nice parts and with the amount the heads iron x's were milled it put me at about 11.8 static

Did you end up finishing this build? I’m looking to build my 340 up in almost the exact same configuration as you’ve chosen. Did you like how it turned out?
