battery quick disconnect question
« on: April 11, 2010 - 10:44:10 AM »
I picked up a battery quick-disconnect ---everstart makes it.....one of those deals where you unscrew the big knob to disconnect power....the label calls it a "swan terminal discoonect"

On the package directions it says to use this on the battery + terminal......then connect the battery + cable to it.  Thing is, the clamp on my battery + cable is too big for the post on the disconnect.

So I used it on the "-" instead.

Anyone see an issue with that?

I was always taught to always remove the ground first anyways....so I think its OK.....but why would the package say to use it on the "+ side?

I found a site selling them and they show it on the "-" side too....

They also show a fused bridge to allow the radio to keep power when the green knob is removed......is this safe?]'

I wired in a 2a fuseholder for that purpose.  That means that I will still have to pop the clamp off the battery when I am doing service and need power disconnected, but when I pull the knob for security the fuse will blow instead of crank, right?

The reason you remove neg 1st is because you might touch something metal with the wrench.  This doen't matter when you are not using a wrench.

Why are you installing a disconnect?

It was one of the things folks mentioned in my "security" post.

I know it wont stop a real thief....they can just put their own knob in assuming the thieves carry one for just this sort of thing....but again, it will be one more step...

Everybody I know, including myself, uses that on their negative side of the battery.

I disconnect mine everytime I park my car for the week. My alarm system and big amplifier cap will drain my battery in a month. Newer type low maintenance batteries can only handle a couple of deep discharges before they are done.
