Ad with Challenger? Cuda?
« on: April 11, 2010 - 06:23:15 PM »
I think I've asked this before, but I don't recall getting a definitive answer and I couldn't find the thread.

Sometime in the early 80s, when the Rabbit started getting big, there was a TV ad featuring a Rabbit as a police car. Memory says that it was in North Carolina, and I had read that the idea was based on a real department that had adopted Rabbits to save money on fuel. But I digress...

In the TV ad, the Rabbit chases and pulls over a musclecar, which I'm pretty sure was a AAR. I seem to recall the strobe stripe being featured prominently as the driver said "A Volkswagen Rabbit?" as if he's just seen a UFO.

Flash forward. I also remember there being a print ad to go along with the campaign. A friend found a copy and got it for me. But I could swear that it looks like a Challenger in the print ad.

Anybody else remember the TV ad? Was it a Cuda in the TV version? And is this a Challenger?

Yep, that's it. I was right about the it being a Cuda, wrong about the AAR, right about North Carolina, wrong about it being a Challenger in the print ad. All in all, and as well as my mind is working lately, not too bad.

that ad came out when I had had my car only a few years. I was young and full of myself, and I vowed to go to North Carolina and teach that sheriff a lesson

They'd try to cover up the brand, by installing black stripes, a unidentified door mirror, and some head light covers.. :roflsmiley:

...Same what we do now if we need a brand-less car in a commercial..
