Lending Tools/Equipment
« on: April 12, 2010 - 06:30:28 AM »
This subject may have been raised before. Just a little rant.

I just picked up my car trailer from a mate of my son in-law who decided to borrow it, connected it to my car and blew the park light fuse.   :faint:  It is dark and raining so I drive to a servo and buy a couple of fuses, put one in after checking to see if there is an obvious short, pop, another one blows, fit last fuse, disconnect lights and drive the 12 miles home down our Cop infested hwy. Made it home without incident, checked over trailer, clearance lights missing, both tail light lens's smashed, the connecting plug is damaged and the jockey wheel broken.    :stomp:  I need it first thing so looks like up early and try to find problem.   :pullinghair:
It seems that everytime I lend a tool or piece of equipment it gets broke or not returned, I have always tried to help people out but it gets expensive and time consuming chasing things up.   :banghead:
How many others have had similar or worse experiences.

There is nothing worse than someone borrowing a trailer, hurting it and bringing it back like nothing happened. What happened to peoples integrity? If I borrow something and damage it I fix it. Heck, I am the kind of guy that feels bad just for putting miles on their trailer tires lol. Sorry that happened to you.

It's BS for sure. I've gotten VERY HARDEND on this kind of thing over the years. Now I only borrow to a select few whom I can trust. Had to many things ruined or majically evaporate...  :eek7: One of my biggest pet peeves at the shop is someone barrowing one of my sockets... jamming a nut inside/cracking the socket... then just putting back in my tool box...  :banghead: Hope you get it straightened out with a little renumeration to boot!  :grinyes:

That has been my problem in the past, I even wrote things on a white board until I ran out of room and some would say they returned the tool even though I knew they hadn't so I then insisted they use the tool at my place but that can be painful watching them and of course having them taking up room.   :22yikes:
Most of my tools are with my son in-law now as we do things together but it is his mates that now "borrow" them.   :faint:
BULLITT, I can only try to make them pay, I have to fix trailer to use and hopefully get paid.   :smilielol:

How about someone asking to use your knife, then they try to pry something open with it, and SNAP goes the blade, on a $50 kershaw.....

no for rent or lend ;  Cuda, tools, trailer , wife   :grinno:
can`t believe how many tools I`ve lost over the years. I guess I`m to blame as well since I never write things like that down, and I forget a lot.  I won`t do it no more... people can use my tools.... at my place.  :2cents:

I don't lend anything out for that reason. Too many horror stories from my Dad (he too no longer lends out tools). Just too much headache.

I like your creed: "No for rent or lend ;  Cuda, tools, trailer , wife"

Can I barrow that?

Thanks,
Ron

The worst thing about lending is when it ruins a friendship. I had a high school buddy I had loaned about $50 bucks. He avoided me like the plague and I had grown up with this guy. We were tight and did a lot of running around together. I really didn't care about the money and if he had called me, I would have told him to forget about it. Our friendship was worth more than $50 bucks to me Instead he just never came around again, I guess because he was embarrased. Sad. I am very particular about what I lend out now and it's partly due to what happened above!! :2thumbs:

My dad had this sign hanging in his shops for years, I whis I know what happened to it.

There are things we hold dear in this life
The tools of our trade
And our dear little wife
So please don’t ask to borrow our tools
And we won’t ask to borrow your wife

I use to loan out tools, and when I did I would write the name of the person who borrowed the tool and what tool they borrowed on a chalkboard, and people still would not get the hint how important the tools were to me.  So now I don’t lend tools out unless its one I found on the side of the road.
