viper caliper on 11.75 rotors....any advice

been lookin at doin this swap for a while..i think the time has come to dive in and order some parts...any words of wisdom?

I've sold a few of these set ups, but never used one myself. Feedback I've gotten is that they do work nice and look even better.

If your interested, I've got a set of adapters, pair of used calipers with pads, new bearing spacers and seals, all for $600. Clear coat on the calipers is flaking, but everything else in the set up is new.

I have a couple of questions - What year are the calipers? Which spindles are the bearing spacers for disc/drum and year? And the last question, can you ballpark the rotor/hat (if they are that way) prices you've seen? I'm debating between the Viper setup and going with Baer since I have a connection.

1st gen calipers are 94 to, I think, 01. The ARE adapter kit for 11.75 rotors can only be used on drum spindles. All drum spindles up to the 73 A body use small bearings. The spacers are required to use the larger inner bearings required by the uni-cast 11.75 rotors. 11.75 rotors can be had as cheap as $40 on Rockauto to around $50-60 at most local parts houses. As a uni-cast design, the hub and rotor are all integrated.

Not sure off the top of my head. I'll have to go measure them. The viper units do use a staggared piston arrangement with the leading piston being larger than the trailing pistons.

You would need hoses, rotors, bearings, grease caps, and master cylinder. All the first generation calipers are black. Some say RT10, some say Viper. You can have them refinished by a rebuilder in red, yellow, silver, or other colors. I do have a divorced style, lightweight master cylinder and adapter too if you're interested.

The black viper caliber is really a brembo. The same kit comes on a 2000 Cobra R.  The difference is the Cobra R kit comes with 13.1 inch rotors front and 11.9 in the Rear. Call Dr Diff. I bought the hole kit from him, Hubs, brackets, spindles and all. I believe he also sells the brackets to make the brembo work with smaller disks. The only bad part about these brakes is its hard to find rims that fit. The caliper offset is almost 2 inches.

Hey some of you guys need to post the info up on this stuff..some of us,myself included dont know this info..like what we would need to do the swap..i went and bought a kit and i like this setup alot better..so can you guys that know what we need to have the cobra or viper setup please post...also does this mess with the tracking?how do i say it....the width of the front and rear..does it narrow it..thats it

The Dr. Diff kit increases track width 1/4" per side IIRC (I emailed him when I found out about the kit).  The AREngineering kit is about 1 1/8" per side (to use standard 94-04 Mustang rims).

The Dr. Diff kit is definitely on my wish list...  its reasonably priced, too!

Well, the larger the rotor, the better the stopping power.  However, the ARE kit does allow 15" wheels.  The Dr. Diff requires 17".

Also I forgot to mention... ARE offers SEVERAL Viper brake kits.  his larger kits change the front wheel track, the basic kit (that HP2 has) you should be able to use regular 15" wheels.

Well, I don't know if it would be practical to have a forum tagged of all the stuff that can be swapped out and adapted to fit our E bodies. When you think of all the individual parts involved with any particular system, the list could be extensive.

I'm unfamiliar with the 13" kits, but the 11.75 kit is stock track width using the stock spindles and rotors and simply  changes out the calipers is all.

They are both available with 11.75 or 13" rotors. They both use Brembo calipers. That makes them darn near identical enough that there would be no appreciable difference. However, Dr. Diff does offer a kit, whereas the ARE set up requirs you source all teh different parts.
