A Body 8 3/4 Rears
« on: April 15, 2010 - 08:29:27 AM »
Which A body cars came out with the 8 3/4 rear end, was it only larger V8's, early or late models?    :clueless:
Anybody got any idea how much they might cost?   :dunno:
Thanks for any and all answers.
Dave

They were available in the entire A-body line, starting in 1967. s far as I know, they were also all small bolt circle axles. However, 1973 and later V-8 cars got 4 1/2" bolt circle, and I THINK the 8 3/4" was still used. I currently have a 1970 Valiant in my possession, that was equipped with the 8 3/4" from the factory, with Sure-Grip, no less. I haven't deeply researched the car, but I believe that this axle was installed as part of a towing package. I have also seen this axle under a 1970 Duster, which was NOT a performance model. Both cars were originally 318 cars, and the Valiant is a 3-on-the-tree model. The Duster was a 904-equipped car. I never ascertained whether the Duster was a tow package car.

Thanks for the quick reply, I am just checking into things at the moment, wasn't thinking about the smaller wheel bolt pattern. Our Valiants changed to the larger pattern in 1971, when they went away from the American A body style to a slightly larger body platform which still resembled the A body but wasn't like anything else, A,B,C,E or M.

No a-body 8 3/4's came with the 4.5" bolt circle.

 :iagree:
in 73 when they went to the 4.5" bolt pattern the 8 3/4 was no longer used
the A body diff goes back to 64 & previous to that but used the flange style with axle nut on the end of the axle

Thank you all, looks like the small bolt pattern may have to be changed if fitted to our later Valiants.   :working:
Was there another rear end fitted that was as strong as the 8 3/4 in the later A bodies?

Not as strong, but still pretty good (better than the GM 10-bolt), is the 8 1/4" rear. I use one in my '67, and it is still taking abuse from a 383 bigblock, with no complaints. Mine came from a 1974 Dart, and had the big bolt circle from the factory. With an aftermarket locker or limited-slip carrier, it is likely almost as strong as the 8 3/4". This diff was also used in the F and M-bodies, and carries a slightly wider stance from those applications.
