727 and 904
« on: October 06, 2004 - 11:34:01 AM »
What years will interchange with my 71?  I've been trying to locate a rebuildable 727 at the local salvage yards, and it seems that nobody will help me because they dont have any 71 laying around.  I'd like to know for sure before I start asking them about different years.

what engine?? theres a difference between bigblock and small block but i think the tail shafts are the same on alot of them??? enless your wanting to keep it date coded alot of years will work..you could even use a 518 od trans.

NO, it's gong onto a 340.  I'm not interested in keeping it date correct either, but the 518s I have found are about double in price.  Is the overall length the same on the 904's and the 727's?  When I do make the switch will my driveshaft work still?

Which tranny do you have now ?
The 904 & 727 use dufferent slip yolks & are a different length
probably the easiest source for a 727 is a truck or van

Right now, I'm using the 904 that was behind the 318 that used to be in the car.  It seems to be working fine, but from what I hear the 904 won't last.  What year truck or van should I be looking for, and what other mods will I have to make?

any 360 truck up to mid to late 80s will have the 727 small block tranny , take the driveshaft so you have the correct slip yolk

Sykes, try this link, it has more information than you will probably ever want to know about the Torqueflites.  Btw, the two cases are very different in size, therefore requiring a different cross member and driveshaft.

You're right Chryco, I realized that after I posted it.  I've been trying to find out some info. for Sykes about the shifter linkage and kickdown.  I'm not certain they are interchangeable either.  Do you know?  I would like to know too, for futures.

Thanks for all the info so far guys.  It looks like I'm going to be trying to gather some parts over the winter.  I don't do much work on the car during those months becasue my garage is barely bigenough for the car itself.  Put it this way, Once I'm i nthe garage, the doors barely open.

No problem Sykes, that's what the boards are for.  ;D  I know for a fact that the torque converters and driveshafts are not interchangeable.  I don't know for certain that these other items are not interchangeable, but I am just mentioning them as things to consider when gathering your parts for the swap....those items are: bellhousing, shifter linkage, kickdown linkage, yoke,  and throttle pressure adjust.

the bell housings you can't change anywaysbut a 360 727 will fit any small block. you might be able to get the shifter linkage to work if you tweak it. i've never done a swap like that...where are you located i might be able to pick you up a 518 pretty cheap.

I'm in south Jersey.  I looked around on ebay, but the 518's are more than I want to spend.  The Junkyards around cant grasp the concept that some parts are interchangable.
