Swapped in a 5 speed tremic. Drive shaft maybe to short
« on: April 16, 2010 - 11:38:15 PM »
I swaped out a auto for a 5 speed Tremic.  I believe the drive shaft maybe to short.  It is sticking out of the tail right at 11/4".  From the yoke to the rubber seal.  Is this to far or dose any one know how much it has to engage the transmission tail?

as I recal the Tremec has a much shorter slip yolk than the orginal Mopar one so it sounds too short to me

Turns out to be about 1/2 inch short.  Classic says that a little bit can magnify any off balance that normally wouldn't cause problem.  Got the drive shaft back yesterday and going to put it in this morning.  Also is there any trick to changing a rear main seal.  I've been puttting this off because I hate to have to pull the engine.  But my wife is tired of the oil stains.

If you are going to be under your car would you be able to get me the measurement from the centre of the tranny (right at the back) to the floor of the car.  I am in the process of making a tranny cross member for a tko and want the proper height.  Thanks

You can change it with the engine in but it is a PIA.  With a small block I had to remove one engine mount and undo the headers as the Milodon pan was captured.  The crosslink has to be moved out of the way too which means splitting joints.  With a big block getting the double gasketed windage tray back on is a PIA.  Its all much easier engine out and upside down.

I have never heard of anyone doing it this way.  Now I see why.  I will get that measurement for you tomorrow and post it for the transmission height.  I take it your going to put in a 5 speed.  I had a guy do mine while it was at the paint shop.  I helped some.  The kit came with the cross member and the frame already had the holes in it.
