360 crank for a 4 speed
« on: April 18, 2010 - 08:29:59 PM »
Hello All,

Does anyone know how I can check to see if the crank on my 360 is ready for a 4 speed? I heard not all of them are set up for the pilot bushing. It is a 360 out of a 1984 ramcharger with an automatic. :1zhelp:

I think you look at back of the crankshaft to see if a pilot hole is drilled.

If the motor is in the truck, nope--

Are you feeling lucky you have to ask yourself :naughty:

Some were and some weren't....Even IF it has a pilot hole, some were drilled an incorrect size and take a special "Conversion" bushing to work, but that's not your biggest problem....Finding an external balnce 360, NON_MAGNUM flywheel is the biggest hurdle, as Chrysler has discontinued them. It's a swap meet for a used one at best...The 318-340 will bolt up, but are INTERNALLY balanced and won't work...Then, there's the "Truck" 11" flywheel that won't fit inside the "Car" 10 1/2" bellhousing......Better off finding a 318 and building it IMO.......

Certainly looks like it unless they have printed it wrong.   :2thumbs:
I bought the MP steel flywheel and the balance weight was an extra for the 360 motor.

Brewers flywheels have it where you take weights off or add them depending on the application. When Drew and I did the 4 speed swap in his RT, he baught a flywheel from them. We called and asked about the weights.  The bearing pilot is most probably what you will end up using. It installs right where the converter snout is installed. Depth is a small issue, since some people trim a bit off the snout / input shaft

I went and looked at the end of the crankshaft and it is about 2 inches deep and about 3 4th wide. Does that sound about right for the 4 speed?

sounds right , if the normal bushing wil not fit the hole you can use the Dakota roller brg , it presses into the converter hub flange
