Man, Chryco, I'm brain dead from a long week and I'm still having a hard time imagining what you are describing.  From the pic I posted below, are you talking about loosening the two bolts on the hood itself (bolts 4 and 5 pointed at by the blue arrows), or do you mean to just loosen the front bolt on the engine compartment part of the hinge (bolt 1 pointed at by the red arrow)?  Or are you talking about something completely different?

Chryco is correct, 100%.  I have done this a few times and the end result is great!  The advantage to a new set of hinges would be that they come already ready to paint with no rust on 'em.
