727 transmission
« on: April 21, 2010 - 11:58:54 AM »
I have a 70 chall I am restoring (almost finished).  I am getting ready to put the engine and trans in it.  The engine is a 440 with a mild cam the tranny is a 727.  I had them both gone through and rebuilt.  I am using synthetic oil in the engine and rear end (323 suregrip).  My brother is addiment I use Amzoil in the tranny.  Should I do that and how many quarts does the 727 take including the torque converter.  Thanks, Danny

Either fluid is fine. Stock pan? 9 to 10 quarts, start up in neutral when filling dry.

Good golly Molly it's hard to believe it holds that much fluid, but it does. Buy it by the gallon.

Yo dixiedog,  whatever you do   DO NOT break in that engine with synthetic oil. Your rings will never seat.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Ditto, I would run Valvoline 20-50 race oil or 30 wt race oil for break in. Has ZDP and other better friction chems that even if you dont have a solid cam are needed for 1st 300-500 miles.

Thanks for the info on the tranny, it is a stock pan.  I will use the Valvoline 20-50 to break in the engine.  This site has been so helpful to me, it has saved me tons of time, money, and headaches.  Thanks guys, Danny

Tacttransman, do I need to fill the torque converter with fluid prior to installing the tranny?  I was told by the builder to do that.  Thanks, danny

No,you do not have to. If you want to put a 1/2 a qt in it that is fine also.

tactransman is correct, when you fire her up but the gear selector in N abd the pump will fill the convertor, when you get close to full ( I like to have the rear wheels of the ground and car blocked or lifted on all 4s ) I run from R 1st with foot on brake, then at an idle put it in low, with no load most times it will accell to 2nd and then 3rd since there is little to no restiction load etc. This is done to verify all gears are working, Make sure that you dont go like 50+  on the rear wheels, no need to and not way safe right. Then brake good to make sure tires stop spinning, place back in N and check fluid again after car is sitting on level ground. Dont over fill.

If all looks great go for a drive after you are all good then retest after hot. Most times you get like  1.2 pint or so expansion with heat? Better 1/2 low than 1/2 to high.
