For all you 74 Chally guys...
« on: October 07, 2004 - 03:42:30 PM »
HELP!!!

I'm going to look at a 1974 Chally this weekend. The car, I was told has some "putty" in the quarters, clean floors and trunk pan, new fenders and framerails that are "average". The car is a 318 2bbl/904 combo, the interior is trashed.

VIN: JH23G4B181813
Miles: 77440

Needs:
-Exhaust
-Dash Pad
-Seats Rebuilt
-Carpet
-Brake Rebuild
-Radiator Support Crossmember
-Shocks
-440/727 ;D

Options include:
-Center Console
-Front Bucket Seats
-Rally Dash
-Rear Defroster
-Front Disk Brakes
-Power Brakes

Any advice?

That car is in edison. NJ. I was going to buy the black one he had. The 74 your looking at I wouldnt even bother for 3,500. The inner fenders are gone. There is not a rallye dash in the car, the console is broken. 2spd wiper motor, flat hood. God only knows whats under that primer. Shop around, you can find something better.

I have not seen that one in person of course but just looking at the body line and the front of the
fenders you might find more then just alittle "putty"

As already stated, that car does look to be pretty rough.  It could be restored, but those body lines don't look the greatest and it'd take some serious cash to get it all fixed up right.

Just an addition to what I previously wrote:  If you could purchase it for $1,500.00, it'd be an alright deal.  However, if he's asking $3,500.00 like Nick said, you can find something with straighter panels than what's on this car.  I thought my passenger side quarter panel crisp body line was bad, but that is worse.  If it was just the lower quarters (below the body line), I'd say take it, but you can tell there's more bondo throughout the entire quarters.

He's firm on prices, I think he's let it go for 3k but thats it . He had over 15 cars hes selling, you'd think he'd work on some of the prices... That inner fender and cowl rot scares me on 74 Matt is going to look at. If those parts are that bad I could only imagine the rails, etc. Looks like it had a tuff life, sure isn't " pretty in pink" anymore LOL. I agree, 1,500 would seem right. Nick

Well, the last time this car was posted on ePay, its starting bid was $2500 and it did not get any bids.

I was hoping to convince the guy to let go of it cheap, as (a) he did not want to see it sit over the winter, and have the bondo rust away ::), and (b) the evident bondowork.

Any other thoughts?

you can try getting it dirt cheap but i think hes firm on the prices.
I've been through this before Matt, it's better off saving your pennys now and buying a solid body thats all there instead of a rust bucket. You will sink more than twice the amount of money in sheet metal, shop suppplies, and your time into that rust bucket. then the solid body car you bought for a few thousand more.

I'd have to agree completely with what Nick said.  About the only way you could come out ahead on the deal would be to get it for just a few hundred.  Then comes the sheetmetal repair and from what I've seen, it'll need full quarters, patches in the inner quarters, and probably some other panels like the trunk extensions.  Having done minimal repair to my solid body, the lower quarters cost $200 a piece, then add about $1,200.00 per side to get them welded in.  Ultimately, the call is up to you, but try not to pay anymore than $1,700 for a car in that status.  It'd be different if it was either a '70 or '71 R/T for resale reasons, but for '72-'74 Challengers, you need to get them for a fair price with a solid body to not go overboard with your funds for the complete restoration.  I'm looking at $10,000.00 for the entire restoration process on my '73 and so far it looks like I'll be right around that marker when it's finished.  These cars are generally worth right around $12,500-$14,000, so I should be in a good situation thanks to the fair price I paid for a solid body.  I hope this helps you some. ;) 8)
