Limited slip (positraction) question
« on: April 23, 2010 - 10:05:19 PM »
What is involved in making a barracuda (in this case a cuda clone) into one with "positraction"? Talk to me in terms of $ amount for parts and level of difficulty for the average shade tree mechanic type.

Also, (I'm learning here) need to know if motor/tranny makes a difference to this kind of conversion in any ways.

Thanks all.

You need to take a peek and see what differential you have under there first. Dana, 8 3/4", etc.

My diff guy would charge $200 for the labor to rebuild my hogs head with no parts and a sure grip is around $600 I believe.  Pulling the center section out is a pain in the butt, but not too hard.  I had a diff guy quote me $250 for that but I did i tmyself. Doable by an amateur with some good advice from CC members and a shop manual.   So figure a grand at a shop if you have it done, $800 if you pull it yourself if nothing else is needed.  .

This is for an 8.75

Thanks for the responses thus far. Now I'm still not sure what the differential is yet but my question if it can be answered is...

...the car is a 340 6pk automatic trans cloned cuda. Was told that they would put in a 3.55 "posi" for me for a couple hundred bucks more. And for the future I'm now aware it's to be known as sure grip! lol

So is the 3.55 a good match for this car? Should I go for a 3.73 or higher? My object to owning a car like this is to do the occasional burnout launches and just have street fun/car show cruise. NO drag strip racing.

3.55 is the perfect gear for the kind of driving you described, IMO.

Thanks Kat for the opinion. Can you tell me your thoughts on what would I expect from driving experience if I went with a 3.92 or so?

I actually went from a 3.55 to a 3.73 when I changed my rearend.

3.73 is about as high as I would go if you still want to drive on the hwy.  Car starts to turn pretty high rpms, it's kind of annoying trying to drive 70mph and turning 3500 rpm for long drives.

I have 3.23's and 70 is around 3K with 26" tires.  OK for long drives but almost too much.

Tom

3.55's would be good on the street, highway with shorter tires may be a bit buzzy, but with some 275/60/15's probably not to bad.
