Is this engine date correct?
« on: April 23, 2010 - 10:11:49 PM »
This is a 340 motor I'm referring too.

Told by seller that under the heads (can't remember what side of motor) on the engine block the following numbers were visible.

3-10-69 (in between the numbers were circle dots not dashes as I just typed though)

So does this sound like a correct reading in that area on the motor? If so then this should indeed be a 340 made on March 10th 1969 right? And if so, it's a damn fine year for the 340 correct again?

Also, the motor has the 3 carbs/six pack.

Please give me thoughts.

Thanks for all help with this.

That sounds like the casting date.

Have him look on the front of the block right below the drivers side head for another series of numbers, the assembly date is in it.

I can also tell you that the engine is orange with that casting date of 3-10-69.

Is what your telling me Alaskan_TA that there is a remote chance that the motor was cast in 1969 but that it could have been assembled as a detuned compression version in 72-73?

Were the engines FIFO (first in first out) back then?

that sounds like a 70 model 340. meaning the block was cast in 69 but the engine was probably assembled and put into a 70 model year car. get the number under the head and check if there is some numbers stamped just above the oilpan rail on the pass. side on a flat pad and get back to us.

It could have been used (most likely) in a '69 or '70 model, the number I mentioned will tell all. Post it here & I can decode it for you.

As far as the FIFO goes, the answer is no. A classic example are T/A blocks, some leftovers were used in '71 models & I have heard of one in a '72 B-Body as well.

wouldn't that be a nice extra to find a t/a block in your 71 cuda! either way sounds like a good buy got some pics of the car?
