Seriously!? Don't people THINK!?
« on: April 26, 2010 - 06:12:54 PM »
I have been searching high and low for the black plastic backing plate for my dashboard name plate (72 fish).

Have been completely unable to o find one up til recently.....

On ebay, found one! It wasnt shiny and new, but the seller said the 3 pins were all in tact. So, I did a buy-it-now.

It shows up today and here is what I found......

Two of the pins were sticking out of the envelope and one is embedded into the liner of the envelope, a flat bubble-wrap type envelope.

 :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Why on earth would you pack something that is delicate and 3 dimensional in a flat paper envelope!??!

With these as rare as they are, its a shame that yet another is ruined.

I guess I could glue it on....although then I will never get it off then if/when I chaneg to a new dash.

I feel for you,I have had some stuff shipped to me and paid good money for the parts and for the shipping and suprised that some of it actually got here (original 71 Gull wing broken in half,Thanks FED EX!):villagers:
I think I go too far sometimes as far as packaging parts up goes but to this date I have never had a complaint or had anything broken during shipping.I spent an hour and a half packaging up a set of original 70 Cuda rocker gills and they went to AZ from CT.To me its worth the effort to make sure the new owners get what they paid for as it left my possesion.
You could use some two sided tape or some weatherstrip adhesive and still be able to remove and reuse later. :2cents:

It was "only" $13.00 shipped.....

But there is the principal of it too....I bought one thing and got another.

true, I could just use double sided tape...might actually be easier than the pins...LOL

I'd file a damage claim with USPS and hoppfully collect the price of a new replacement. No, the seller should not have shipped it in that manner, but bottom line it was the delivery process where something heavy was throwed on it that broke the pins. But no matter the cause or reason you DID NOT get what you bought, although still useable as you have discussed.

Well, the first issue is that they dont make new replacements...or I would have bought one of those already. Apparantly not being made yet I am told.

That said, I am not sure I can go after the USPS....its not insured and the package wasnt abused....it was handled as a flat item when its not, but thats because itwas in a flat item package.

I cant blame the USPS when it wasnt there fault.

The kicker here is that is doesnt fit quite right on the dash overlay.  :banghead:  Looks like the double sided tape is the only way it will work anyways.    :pullinghair:

That is very disappointing especially after looking for so long, finding a good one, and then to have it arrive damaged. That just plain bites. And you are right, people just don't think. I doubt the seller had ill intent when he shipped it. Hurried preparations and lack of attention to detail most likely. I know all to well about shipping stuff as I used to ship expensive antiques all over the world. I recently bought a new set of catalytic converters for my Land Rover. It's one section of "Y" pipe with the two cats welded in. Very expensive. The UPS driver pulled up and just handed them to me. No box, no bubble wrap....nothing but a shipping label glued to it. Well guess what. The piping was over 2" out of alignment. Got bent in shipping. Yeah, I fixed it, but was pissed that I spent almost $500 bucks for bent piping!! Sorry for stealing the thread!! I feel your pain & I hope you can find another one with good pins!!

So what would you guys do?

I havent gotten a reply back from the seller yet....

As I mentioned, i gues I can just double side tape it on, assuming I can get the armor all off that area...LOL....its a dash cover, and it turns out that area is a bit smallish anyways.....

But I paid for a plate in good shape....hate to let it go seeing as I havent found ANYTHING up til now and can probably still use it....but would I be wrong asking the seller for a rebate of some amount?

I think you should ask for a refund , he pkged it , I would have atleast popped it into cardboard to protect the pins , it is not what you bid on & you didn`t damage it ,you should get $$ back

Even if it was insured the USPS won't pay replacement cost. They will ask you for a copy of your receipt and pay only what you paid for it, regardless of value. Go ahead, ask me how I know!  :-\

He finally got back to me......didnt have much to say...no "sorry about that" or anything...just a one liner
that says  "I can refund you 2.00 or you can send back for a full refund"

The plate cost me $7.00 in a "buy it now" plus $3.95 shipping.....that would be about 30% off the original price.

Thing is it'll cost him $4.00 to get it back...LOL

So the question becomes -- what is a used plate worth in great shape and what is a plate with no pins worth?

Or maybe its a "whats it worth to YOU kind of thing....

I know I know....we aint talking high finance.

Its the principle.    :money:

I wouldnt know what to say replacement cost would be...cant find them anywhere to buy them in good shape which is why I jumped on it.

*******update

Ah....the drama!    :bananasmi

Well, i figured that if I could get a whopping $3 back (another dollar) I would at least feel a little better and still have a plate I could in theory use, if not the correct way. So I sent a pleasant note asking if he would agree to that....

The guy emails back another one liner and says to just send it back and he will refund my money.

So I guess that $1 is a huge thing for him, so I replied back to just send me the $2 refund....waiting for a reply.

My feeling/concern is that he wont want to pay me the full refund PLUS reimburse me the $4.50 additional or so that I will have to spend to get it back to him....that wouldn't make sense. All he has said is he will refund my money.   No mention of paying for the return shipping. Unless he figures he could get at least that much more back reselling it with broken pins?  Did I get a steal or something? $11 for the dash plate, without pins?

Now that I have seen the thing I could probably make something that would pass for it, but I figure its already done....so I would keep it.

Of course now I suppose he can renig on the refund offer and say take it or leave it at full price. Should he decide to renig on his partial refund offer I guess then I go to paypal etc. and complain.

I have no way to know he wont screw me for the return shipping plus the paypal fees I would have to pay to get the additional money.........so I may as well keep the damn thing and hope he has morals and refunds at least the $2.

LOL  I know....big finance!   :money:
